Worker Protection Organizer

(with travel to Cook County)

Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ) is a worker center fighting for good, living wage jobs among the thousands of logistics workers in the Chicagoland and Will County area, the largest intermodal logistics hub in the United States. The Worker Protection Organizer is focused on worker outreach and providing resources to warehouse workers in Will and Cook County. The organizer will be responsible for a variety of aspects of organizing, will develop workplace organizing campaigns, and recruit and sustain organizing committees. This includes but is not limited to, providing resources for legal violations, health and safety concerns, and support for workers fighting harassment and discrimination in the workplace. The Worker Protection Organizer will work closely with and under the direction of the Organizing Director and Programs Director for organizing and outreach efforts, respectively.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Develop and execute field plans with organizing goals;
• Promote and present WWJ’s Ongoing Know Your Rights and workplace safety presentations;
• Distribute Know Your Rights and PPE Materials;
• Attend community events in Chicago, Suburban Cook County and Will County to represent WWJ;
• Assist organizing team in growing WWJ’s leadership committees;
• Conduct worker outreach efforts;
• Lead one-on-one and group meetings with workers;
• Identify and develop workplace leaders;
• Maintain accurate information on worksites and campaign activities;
• Gather information necessary for enforcement of labor laws;

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
One to two years of community, organizing, labor experience, advocacy or social work. Spanish-language fluency or proficiency is a plus.

• Experience in identifying and developing new leaders and activists.
• Ability to work independently;
• Exceptional people skills and patience;
• Responsive and positive team player who enjoys versatility and constant new challenges;
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and database management tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Accepts performance-based criticism and directions;
• Works well under pressure;
• Outreach duties require work during outside regular office hours up to and including nights and weekends.
• Additionally, employee must be able to drive or travel within Will County with reliable transportation. Must be in possession of an insured vehicle and have a valid driver's license.
• Employee must be able to work in a moderately noisy and crowded work environment without an expectation of privacy.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

• Salary range: $49,000 – $53,000, commensurate with experience
• Health insurance coverage (with employee contribution for dental coverage)
• 401(k) retirement plan (no employer match)
• Monthly car stipend and mileage reimbursement for work-related travel
