This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Public Works located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City.

Employees may choose between the following:

• Employer-Paid PERS Retirement: $26.9797 - $37.7717 hourly / $56,117.88 - $78,565.24 annually
• Employee/Employer-Paid PERS Retirement: $32.5480 - $45.5671 hourly / $67,699.84 - $94,779.62 annually

This position is covered by the Carson City Employees Association. The current collective bargaining agreement outlines the generous benefits offered to Carson City employees.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

• Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire
• Must take pre-employment physical examination and Respiratory Fit test

Knowledge of: Policies and procedures of the landfill unit. Use of specified computer applications involving word processing, data entry and/or standard report generation. Business arithmetic. Safety policies and practices. Record keeping principles and practices. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.

Skill in: Maintaining accurate financial records and preparing accurate and timely reports. Reading, interpreting and explaining rules, policies and procedures. Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment that ensures a safe and effective working environment. Performing basic mathematical calculations. Performing assigned duties in a safe manner. Following oral and written instructions. Performing a variety of construction and maintenance tasks. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Dealing successfully with City staff at various levels, the public, in person and over the telephone. Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, contractors and the public.

Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews.

Employees must maintain an active telephone. Employees must reside within 30 minutes of Carson City. Employees must be willing to work overtime, shifts, weekends and holidays. May be required to be on-call.

All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency. Employees shall be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $47.00 and a drug screen which costs $84.00. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen. Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All candidates who are offered employment with Carson City must complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 along with the required proof of their right to work in the United States and proof of their identity prior to starting employment. This position is covered under the authority of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Act (FMCSA). All employees covered by this job description are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the requirements of the FMCSA, as set forth in 49 CFR part 382 as amended; and the Carson City FMCSA Anti-Drug & Alcohol Misuse Prevention Program; which are hereby referenced and made part of the job description and mandates urine testing and breath alcohol testing for safety-sensitive and commercial driver's license positions.
