Department Human Resources Reports To HR Director Location Bridgeport, CT What We Offer Competitive salary and performance-based bonus structure Company paid for benefits package (health, dental, vision) 401k plan with match Annual Salary range from $85K to $120K What You’ll Do The HR Generalist supports recruiting, hiring, and workforce needs in a blue-collar road construction environment, sourcing candidates for roles ranging from entry-level field positions to supervisory, management, administrative, fleet, shop, and operations. The role also assists the HR Director with compliant employment practices, HR administration, and employee support. Success requires strong recruiting judgment, practical HR knowledge, and the ability to work effectively with both field and office teams in a fast-paced construction setting. Key Responsibilities Recruit across field, shop, administrative, supervisory, management, fleet, safety, and operations roles. Source candidates through job boards, social media, referrals, trade schools, workforce programs, industry networks, and direct outreach. Manage the full hiring cycle — postings, screening, interviews, pre-employment checks, offers, and onboarding. Partner with hiring managers on staffing needs, seasonal demand, position requirements, and long-term workforce planning. Maintain HR records, including applicant tracking, personnel files, and compliance documentation. Support compliance with EEO, wage and hour, FMLA, ADA, I-9, DOT, and other labor regulations. Assist the HR Director with employee relations, policy updates, benefits, payroll changes, offboarding, audits, and special projects. What You Bring Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered. 4–7 years of HR experience, with a proven track record in recruiting and hiring. Recruiting experience in blue-collar, construction, transportation, fleet, or similar labor-based environments preferred. Experience hiring for roles spanning entry-level, skilled trade, administrative, supervisory, and management positions. Working knowledge of employment law, HR compliance, employee documentation, and general HR administration. Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of modern recruiting strategies, sourcing methods, candidate screening, and applicant tracking. Ability to communicate professionally with candidates, employees, hiring managers, and leadership. Solid understanding of labor law, compliance practices, confidentiality, and HR documentation standards. Strong organizational skills, able to manage multiple open positions and competing HR deadlines. Proficiency with HR systems, applicant tracking tools, recruiting platforms, and standard office software. Sound judgment, problem-solving, attention to detail, and discretion with sensitive employee information. Preferred Qualifications Prior recruiting experience in road construction, DOT-related operations, fleet, shop, CDL, or seasonal field labor environments. Experience building candidate pipelines through trade schools, workforce programs, employee referrals, job fairs, and industry networking. Experience supporting employee relations, HR audits, handbook updates, benefits, payroll-related HR updates, and compliance tracking. Schedule Full-time Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 6 PM May be flexible within core office hours (8 hrs./day, 40 hrs./week) Work Environment This position operates primarily in an office-based HR environment supporting field, shop, fleet, administrative, and management teams within a road construction organization. The role may require occasional participation in job fairs, hiring events, field coordination, or visits to operational locations. Physical Requirements This position requires prolonged periods of sitting, computer work, phone use, and extended screen time.
