The New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD) works to enhance the state's economic growth and vitality by supporting businesses, communities, and individuals throughout New Mexico. NMEDD's mission is to create a diverse, sustainable economy through strategic partnerships, policies, and programs that foster job creation and business development. Within the department, the Community, Business, and Rural Development team focuses on providing resources and support to communities, businesses, and rural areas to help them thrive.
This team works on initiatives aimed at promoting economic opportunities, improving infrastructure, and supporting rural development projects that create lasting impact across New Mexico.

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.


Why does the job exist?

This position will serve as an Economic Development Representative serving a four-County region including Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Taos Counties.
The position will serve as a field representative and will build capacity and partnerships with local and regional economic developers to grow jobs, businesses and economically healthy and sustainable communities.
The selected candidate must reside within one of the four counties served (Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Taos County) at the time of hire and must maintain residency within the service region as condition of continued employment.


How does it get done?

1. Facilitate local business growth in local communities by leveraging various funding sources.
2. Provide customer service and technical assistance to local businesses, community and tribal stakeholders.
3. Assist in the implementation of plans to support business expansion, retention and start-up projects.
4. Collaborate and build relationships with community stakeholders to respond to growth.
5. Provide financial, incentive and legislative analyses as they pertain to local economies.
6. Serve as liaison between community and tribal stakeholders and state and federal agencies.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following skills;
1. Customer service with strong verbal and written communication.
2. Navigating reources to include multiple funding sources that may include local, tribal, state, and federal grants, financing and access to capital for businesses.
3. Goal and detail oriented, ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
4. Community, tribal, and business development outreach through BRE, networking with local, tribal, state and federal stakeholders, business, professional or economic development organizations.
5. Experience working with municipal and county governments and familiarity with public processes.
6. Public speaking and presentations.


Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Economics, Economic Development, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Historic Preservation, Communications/Journalism, Community Development, Urban Design, and/or Urban and Regional Planning from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in economic or community development programs. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.


Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
Must obtain and maintain a defensive driving certificate from the state of New Mexico.
Must reside in one of four counties (Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Taos) as a condition of employment.


Working Conditions

Extensive in-field travel working with local/regional economic developers.
Ability to manage and report work through appropriate software programs of the division or department.
Work is usually performed in a home/ office setting with extensive exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT), personal computer and telephone usage.
Sitting for long periods, bending, stooping to file and occasionally lifting a minimum of 25 pounds.
This job will require work from home office, unless the employee is able to identify the use of appropriate office space free of charge in his/her Region.
Tools necessary to work from home office will be provided by the department, including computer equipment and cell phone.
Occasionally work extra hours, on weekends and holidays.
