Senior Mechanic

About the role We are currently seeking a Sr Mechanic/ Underground Electrician to join our Maintenance team at our Gateway North Mine. The hourly rate for this position is $41.06. Gateway North Mine is an underground coal mine located in Coulterville, Illinois, just an hour outside St. Louis, Missouri. The mine produces high quality thermal coal that is loaded onto haul trucks and shipped by rail. A continuous miner is used to extract the coal. Peabody Gateway North Mine maintains a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents. Responsibilities Perform electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic repairs of underground mining equipment. Maintain underground equipment in permissible condition as defined by MSHA. Perform scheduled maintenance, and complete reports and records as required. Perform other non-maintenance tasks as assigned. Schedule & Shift This position will work Monday-Friday, rotating every two weeks on a 3‑shift schedule of midnights, afternoons, and days. The position may also require work on weekends, holidays, or other shifts as deemed necessary. Benefits: 401K matching, medical, dental, and vision health plans with minimal cost to the employee. Benefit eligibility and PTO begin on the first day of work. About you Must have current MSHA electrical certification (high, medium, and low voltage, underground). Must have one (1) year of underground mining experience. Must be knowledgeable of state and federal mining regulations pertaining to underground mining, including electrical permissibility. Must have demonstrated welding and fabrication skills. Must have demonstrated operating, repairing, and troubleshooting skills on section and outby equipment (continuous miners, battery haulage equipment, feeders, scoops, roof bolters, etc.). Must be able to troubleshoot from blueprints and service manuals. Must have an underground miner’s license or face papers in the state where working. Must possess high school diploma or GED. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for prolonged periods on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire shift. Ability to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles. Ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time across different sections of the mine with varying clearance and headroom. Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as required by Company and MSHA. Ability to bend or stoop for the full work period as a result of mine height. Ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and onto equipment and ladders. Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle) and have rapid reflex movements of arms/legs and good hand‑to‑eye coordination. Ability to lift 25–50 lbs. frequently and occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs. Ability to work in extreme conditions, including changing weather, dust, mud, varying noise levels, light/dark conditions, and confined spaces. Ability to work various shifts (days, evenings, nights, rotations, weekends, holidays).
