Fire Sprinkler Fitter
Position OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Fire Sprinkler Fitter to install, test, commission, maintain and repair fire protection systems on commercial, industrial and residential projects. The ideal candidate will read and interpret plans, perform system layout and hydraulic calculations per NFPA standards, and execute quality pipefitting, brazing/welding and assembly work while following strict safety and code requirements. This role works closely with forepersons, engineers and inspectors to ensure systems are installed correctly, tested, and documented for acceptance. Key Responsibilities
- Install, assemble and fit sprinkler system piping, hangers, supports and attachments in accordance with drawings and NFPA 13/14 requirements.
- Read, interpret and verify blueprints, shop drawings, schematics and specifications; perform layout and determine material needs.
- Perform pipe cutting, threading, grooving (Victaulic) and bending; install grooved couplings, fittings and flanges.
- Execute welding (MIG/TIG/Stick), brazing and soldering tasks where required; ensure joints meet quality and leak-free standards.
- Install and maintain wet, dry, pre-action, deluge, foam-water and standpipe systems; install and test fire pumps.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and assist in system design verification for flow and pressure requirements.
- Conduct hydrostatic pressure testing, flow testing and commissioning activities; prepare and document test reports.
- Inspect, maintain and repair valves including control, check and alarm valves; install and service backflow preventers.
- Install and adjust hangers, seismic bracing and supports to meet structural and code requirements; install firestopping and penetration sealing.
- Assist with fire alarm system integration, control wiring and coordination with other trades for system interfaces.
- Carry out inspection, testing and preventive maintenance programs in accordance with NFPA 25 and company procedures.
- Follow site safety plans and use personal protective equipment; perform confined space entry and fall protection work as required.
- Torque bolts and fittings to specified values; ensure proper alignment and clearance of components.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, inspectors and other trades to resolve installation issues and maintain project schedules.
- Maintain accurate jobsite documentation, record materials used, testing results and service logs; communicate deficiencies and corrective actions.
- Train and mentor apprentices and junior fitters when applicable; support continuous improvement and adherence to best practices.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a sprinkler fitter or pipefitter on fire protection systems (minimum 3 years; 5+ years preferred).
- Journeyman or Master Sprinkler Fitter license or equivalent preferred.
- NICET certification in inspection, testing and/or design recommended (NICET II/III/IV depending on role).
- Proficient in pipefitting and plumbing practices; skilled with pipe cutting, threading, grooving, bending and use of power and hand tools.
- Experience with welding (MIG/TIG/Stick), brazing and soldering to industry standards.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience installing wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, foam-water and standpipe systems.
- Experience installing, testing and maintaining fire pumps, performing hydrostatic pressure tests and flow testing.
- Ability to perform hydraulic calculations and interpret NFPA 13 system layout and design requirements; working knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 20 and 25.
- Competence with valve maintenance (control/check/alarm valves), backflow preventer installation and adjustment.
- Experience installing hangers, supports, seismic bracing and performing firestopping/penetration sealing.
- Familiarity with grooved coupling systems (Victaulic) and torqueing procedures.
- Comfortable performing confined space entry, fall protection and working at heights; current OSHA safety training.
- Strong blueprint reading skills and ability to interpret plans and schematics accurately.
- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation; ability to pass drug screen and background check.
- Physically able to lift and handle materials, work in varied environmental conditions and maintain focus on safety and quality.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to work in a team and mentor junior staff; strong problem-solving and time-management abilities.
