Family Services Supervisor

Job Description: This is an essential position. The position provides direct supervision of the investigation of child abuse/neglect complaints in accordance with VDSS and agency policy and procedures. The position provides leadership and guidance to the Child Protective Services Unit in assessing the safety and well-being of children at risk and interfaces with the courts by providing written and oral reports. Participation in agency and community teams. The position provides guidance while evaluating the need for services and referring parents/caretakers and children to community resources for remediation and support. The position evaluates social service programs and program budgets. The position applies appropriate human resource practices in the supervision of staff, recommends policy changes based on analysis and evaluation, deals with difficult and/or dangerous cases, interprets programs and policies to other community partners and the public. Participates in community planning and development of resources, jobs, and community supports. This is not a remote position. Employee must have a positive attitude and helpful demeanor; exhibit a professional working relationship with staff, clients, and the community. Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s): Considerable knowledge of: Social Work principles and practices and understanding of human behavior; state/agency laws, policies, and procedures related to Child Welfare Services; socio-economic, cultural, and health issues affecting customers within the community. Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of effective supervision, of policies, procedures, and regulations relating to the Child Protective Services program. Knowledge: of services to include needs assessments, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of satisfaction. Knowledge of: social work principles, practices, and treatment modalities and social-economic, health, and employment problems of individuals, groups, and communities. Skills: Operate personal computer, navigate the internet and work within multiple computer programs; operate agency vehicles; operate a fax and copy/scan machines; appropriately answer the telephone and obtain relevant information as deemed necessary. Ability to: Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; work with diverse populations, sometimes in adversarial conditions while maintaining objectiveness and professionalism; work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage work activities and assist others in planning and management, develop programs and procedures, make a decision in difficult situations, apply treatment and intervention approaches, interpret laws, policies, and regulations regarding human services, ensure compliance and recommend needed changes; supervise others working with clients; analyze situations to make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations, train evaluate, lead and develop subordinate staff. Demonstrated ability to work well with others and maintain a positive and professional attitude. Qualifications – Education, Experience, Licensure, and Certification: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area as mandated in Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia and implemented by the Virginia Board of Social Services. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable, with additional work experience in a leadership role and considerable experience in human services programs or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
