About the Role:
The Sterile Processing Department Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical instruments and equipment used in patient care. This position is responsible for the meticulous cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and medical devices. The technologist ensures that all sterilization processes comply with established protocols and regulatory standards to prevent infection and maintain patient safety. Collaboration with healthcare professionals is essential to provide timely and sterile instruments for various medical procedures. Ultimately, this role supports the overall healthcare delivery system by maintaining the highest standards of instrument processing and infection control.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Technician training program or equivalent experience.
- Basic knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and medical terminology.
- Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain meticulous records.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and handle medical instruments safely.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent.
- Experience working in a hospital sterile processing department or surgical environment.
- Familiarity with electronic tracking systems and inventory management software.
- Strong understanding of regulatory standards such as those from AAMI and OSHA.
- Additional training in advanced sterilization technologies and quality assurance.
Responsibilities:
- Perform thorough cleaning and decontamination of surgical instruments and medical equipment using manual and automated methods.
- Inspect instruments for damage, wear, and proper function, ensuring all items meet quality standards before sterilization.
- Assemble instrument sets according to procedure-specific requirements and hospital protocols.
- Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and low-temperature sterilizers, monitoring cycles and documenting results.
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
- Adhere strictly to infection control policies, safety guidelines, and regulatory compliance standards.
- Collaborate with surgical teams and other healthcare staff to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments.
- Participate in ongoing training and quality improvement initiatives to enhance department performance.
