CNC Machining Set Up & Operator – 2nd Shift (3:30pm-12am)

Sets up and operates one or more computer numerical control machine tools that automatically mill, drill, broach, and ream metal parts. Adjusts machine feed and speed, changes cutting tools, or adjusts machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machine malfunctions. Analyzes specifications and decides on tooling, applying knowledge of metal properties, shop mathematics, and machining operations. Studies blueprint to visualize machining to be done, and plans sequence of operations. Selects and installs work-holding fixtures on machine. Positions and secures tools in tool holders at each station of tool post, and positions tools in relation to work piece. Moves stops, cams, or levers to control position of work piece and feeding of tools. Feeds tools to and along work piece and to indexing toolholders between operations, or engages feeding and indexing mechanisms. Verifies conformance of machined work piece to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as gauges, calipers, and micrometer. Required to have specialized experience with particular material, product, precision level, machining process, or size, type, or trade name of machine.

Selects, measures, assembles, and sets machine tools, such as drill bits and milling or cutting tools, using precision gauges and instruments. Lifts workpiece to machine with hoist or crane. Mounts, installs, aligns, and secures tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpiece on machine, including using hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Loads control media in machine controller or enter commands to retrieve programmed instructions. Determines specifications or procedures for tooling set-up, machine operation, workpiece dimensions, or numerical control sequences, using blueprints, instructions, and machine knowledge. Calculates and sets machine controls to position tools, or regulate cutting depth, speed, feed, or coolant flow. Monitors machine operation and control panel displays to detect malfunctions and compare readings to specifications Starts automatic operation of computer numerical control machine to machine parts or test setup, workpiece dimensions, or programming. Stops machine to remove finished workpiece or change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequence. Enters commands or manually adjusts machine controls to correct malfunctions or tolerances. Confers with supervisor or programmer to resolve machine malfunctions and production errors and obtains approval to continue production. Cleans machine, tooling, and parts, using solvent or solution and rag.

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or two to three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills include product inspection, operation and control, mathematics, operation monitoring, operations analysis, equipment selection, troubleshooting, problem identification, active learning, solution appraisal, time management, and reading comprehension. This position requires lifting up to 10 pounds over 2/3 of the time, and lifting up to 40 pounds up to 2/3 of the time. Vision includes close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
