Orthopedic Cast Technician

Job Overview The Orthopedic Technician supports clinical activity for orthopedic providers and clinics. The technician is responsible for all activities related to casting, including casting, ordering and maintaining supplies, inventory management and equipment care. They maintain the Cast Room and designated orthopedic care areas, room patients, and comply with all health and safety policies, telephone and house standards of UCSF Medical Center. Key Responsibilities Coordinate all cast‑related activities: perform accurate and timely casting of upper and lower extremities, cast removal, and gait training with crutches. Maintain and inventory the Cast Room and orthopedic care areas, ensuring equipment is functional and the room remains clean. Order supplies, restock the clinic and cast room, maintain appropriate inventory levels, and work with management on monthly supply budgeting. Document required patient information accurately and promptly using Apex, including vital signs, pain screening, medication history, and patient education for cast care. Adhere to infection control standards and other relevant health and safety policies. Assist with patient flow in and out of clinic, room patients, and participate in department meetings. Collaborate with the team: promote a constructive work atmosphere, communicate pertinent information, provide support to colleagues, and prioritize tasks between casting and rooming duties. Demonstrate reliable, professional behavior, proactively solve problems, and resolve patient complaints efficiently. Communicate effectively with orthopaedic physicians and other healthcare professionals. Maintain positive communication with patients, families, and staff, including proper phone etiquette and conflict resolution. Required Qualifications Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. At least three years of experience as an Orthopedic Technician. Strong knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy. Ability to work independently with good organizational skills. Good communication skills; able to explain cast care to patients clearly. Courteous, friendly, and cooperative work style. CPR certification. Certification as an Orthopedic Technician. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of casting experience.
