HLA Technologist I

Location: Texas Medical Center, Houston, TX Salary Range: $57,320 to $67,435 FLSA Status: Nonexempt Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Summary The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Abdominal Transplantation section, is seeking a qualified HLA Technologist I to perform laboratory testing for the purpose of evaluating the immune status of transplant patient candidates before and after transplantation. This testing will lead to the matching of donor solid organs to transplant candidates on waitlists for our various client hospitals, which include Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The selected HLA Technologist will be an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual who demonstrates good laboratory techniques and works well in a team environment. This position will perform clinical laboratory testing for the purpose of evaluating the immune status of transplant patient candidates before and after transplantation. These functions include deceased donor and living donor evaluation and crossmatches with the recipient. All duties and responsibilities are performed in compliance with the government and Baylor College of Medicine policies and procedures, rules, regulations, and codes. Job Duties Performs various histocompatibility laboratory tests in Molecular, AbID, Flow and Serology sections, including but not limited to HLA typing, antibody identification, and crossmatching procedures. Performs and manages sample processing and maintaining workflow. Performs and documents quality control and maintenance procedures in accordance with laboratory protocols. Maintains patient records and results documentation. Utilizes computers appropriately for entry of patient inquiry, specimen inquiry, test results, and quality control. Cleans and maintains laboratory benches, equipment, and computer analysis workspace. Performs reagent inventory management, ordering, and quality control verification. Maintains compliance with wearing PPE and OHSA guidelines. Performs, understands, communicates, and complies with standard and conditions set by various governmental and accrediting agencies including CAP, CMS, ASHI and CLIA. Participates in the laboratory’s on-call rotation (24/7) for the histocompatibility testing of all deceased donors. Attends continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge in the field. Attends all mandatory programs on Universal Precautions, Disaster Plan, Electrical and Fire Safety, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Environment Safety, Biosafety and Hazard Communication Program. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement. No experience required. Preferred Qualifications One year experience in any area of clinical laboratory medicine. Work Authorization Requirement: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
