Associate General Counsel, Family Office

Job Summary: The Associate General Counsel will provide comprehensive legal support to a multi-generational family office. This role requires a versatile attorney with strong analytical skills and the ability to manage diverse legal matters, including corporate governance, investment transactions, compliance, and estate planning. The position demands discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced, confidential environment. The Associate General Counsel will operate with a high level of discretion and autonomy and will deal with highly sensitive and confidential information. Absolute discretion and confidentiality are required. Key Responsibilities Advise on corporate, tax, investment, real estate, employment, and fiduciary matters. Draft and implement policies and procedures in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Prepare and review legal instruments and documents such as commercial contracts, leases, licenses, purchase and sale agreements, real estate documents, trusts, and corporate filings. Negotiate complex agreements with third‑party vendors and service providers. Support private investments including private equity, venture capital, and real estate. Liaise with external counsel and collaborate with internal teams alongside the General Counsel. Participate in the development of complex legal structures and strategies for estate planning purposes. Ensure operations comply with applicable laws and regulations, identifying risks and developing mitigation plans. Manage federal and state regulatory filings, including annual reports and resolutions in domestic and international jurisdictions. Coordinate shareholder and corporate resolutions, compliance documents, minute books, stock ledgers, and annual filings. Conduct research and analysis of specific legal questions and scenarios, review legal publications, pending legislation, and monitor emerging trends. Participate in family office and private trust company conferences, symposia, and industry initiatives. Handle other legal matters as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Bachelor’s degree and J.D. from an accredited law school; admission to a state bar, with the ability to be admitted to the Michigan bar if not already. Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal department, family office, or private trust company. Broad knowledge of corporate, tax, and investment law; familiarity with estate planning and compliance. Exceptional analytical, drafting, and communication skills; ability to synthesize complex legal issues into actionable business points. Collaborative leadership style and strong work ethic; business‑oriented problem‑solving and clear, concise advice on established timelines. Integrity, honesty, and unbiased reporting to the General Counsel. Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills; ability to present information verbally and in writing to diverse audiences. Professional, reliable, and self‑motivated; ability to work well under pressure and address people candidly. Experience handling highly confidential information discreetly. Strong analytical thinking, fact‑based approach, and presence of maturity. Adaptability to changing circumstances, priority management, and efficient multi‑project handling with attention to detail and deadlines. Proficient in legal research systems and Microsoft Office. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Previous experience in a family office setting or with high‑net‑worth clients. Experience with trust or family office legal and compliance issues. Working Conditions Works in a normal office environment with no discomfort due to temperature, noise, dust, or the like.
