Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Job Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences is seeking a full-time TH Instructional Support Assistant / Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.


Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, the successful candidate will:

• Treat patients referred for skilled occupational therapy in acute care and acute rehabilitation setting, according to departments standard of care.
• Provide appropriate education to patient and family alike. Provides instruction to the patient, family members and other health care professionals involved in the care of the patient.
• Submit requests for durable medical equipment and adaptive assistive devices, orthotics, and prosthetic needs.
• Complete and submit all required patient documentation and billing in electronic medical record; and related patient care paperwork.
• Provide supervision to rehabilitation aides and volunteers.
• Coordinate and participates in instructional activity for COTA students, nurses, and house staff.
• Assist in management of OT inventory control, equipment, and records maintenance.
• Assist in the supervision of department rehab aides per patient transport, department area/equipment, management (transport schedule, equipment checks and related logs, department work orders and deliveries, etc.).
• Participate and assist in prn ongoing and new performance improvement (Pl) projects, grant projects, and occupational therapy clinical research.
• Participate in pm community outreach educational and clinical care activities.
• Participate and assist in department quality improvement initiatives and related activities.
• Adhere to all compliance regulations, licensure requirements, and federal and state regulations.
• Maintain department productivity standards and procedures.
• Model the WE CARE values of the institution.
• Demonstrate the ability to carry out physical demands of lifting and physically assisting patients during functional mobility intervention; pushing of wheelchairs/stretchers and operation of DME and therapeutic equipment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy.
• New York State Occupational Therapy Assistant License.
• Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.
• 0 to 3+ years of Occupational Therapy Assistant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• BLS / CPR Certification.
