JOB DESCRIPTION

The ALBA Language Neurobiology laboratory, directed by Dr. Maria Luisa Gorno Tempini, studies how language is organized into brain networks across the lifespan. The ALBA team is part of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, an NIA‑designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The laboratory focuses on how language skills and brain regions are impacted by neurological conditions, including Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). This Data Analyst position is focused on identifying sensitive linguistic, cognitive, motor or neuroimaging biomarkers of PPA and predicting longitudinal disease progression using multimodal imaging.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Apply database concepts under general supervision, resolving basic procedural and technical issues in the context of department policies and procedures. Work on database-related issues and projects of moderate scope, applying defined IT procedures and practices. Interact with internal and external stakeholders as needed. Maintain moderately sized databases with multiple tables, using basic database design and programming techniques. Implement performance‑tuning techniques, including indexes and advanced SQL syntax. Maintain database security and integrity controls. Monitor policies, procedures and standards related to database management. Assist with implementing enhancements that improve system performance and reliability.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Minimum 1 year of related experience. Knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge of capacity planning and interface specifications. Experience with unstructured data management (text, images). Strong judgment and decision‑making skills; experience in identifying system performance measures and improving performance through configuration and programming. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Reasoning and problem‑solving abilities, including development of original ideas. Interpersonal skills, service orientation, active listening, and organizational skills. Ability to multi‑task and prioritize tasks. Basic programming skills in Bash, R, Python or MATLAB. Knowledge of RedCap utilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/train­ing. Basic knowledge of automated speech analysis tools, including Whisper, OpenAI, and spaCy.

SALARY RANGE

$71,994.24 – $154,595.52 (annual rate).

Contracted position ending 03/01/2027.
