Researcher/Scientist IV, Department of Child Health (COM-P) Posting Number: req26599 Department: COM Phx Child Health Department Website Link: College of Medicine-Phoenix Location: Greater Phoenix Area Address: Phoenix, AZ USA The Research Scientist IV is a dedicated, full-time research leader within the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, providing advanced scientific leadership in pediatric and congenital cardiovascular surgery. Reporting directly to and under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Velez, the Research Scientist IV will be responsible for advancing the Division's research priorities, meeting annual scholarly expectations, and leading collaborative clinical and translational research programs that support the Heart Center's academic mission. The incumbent will lead and support clinical research initiatives that advance patient care and the academic mission of the Heart Center, utilizing institutional databases, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Heart Surgery Database, and investigator-initiated research projects. The incumbent will independently design and lead complex research studies, serve as a senior collaborator, oversee laboratory operations and personnel, and participate in clinical productivity reviews, didactic conferences, multidisciplinary rounds, and educational activities. The position is responsible for publishing research findings, developing grant proposals, securing research funding, and collaborating across the Heart Center to advance innovative, high-quality research. Duties & Responsibilities Design, formulate research methods, and conduct pre-clinical research pertaining to congenital heart defects. Participate in projects on research pertaining to congenital heart defects and produce a minimum of three scholarly work products per year. Serve as senior collaborator on highly complex research initiatives, leading substantive aspects of the project. Collaborate with other researchers, departments, or institutions, leading to interdisciplinary work and are also involved in mentoring and teaching activities. Perform scientific data collections, reductions, and analyses involving routine procedures characterized by use of independent judgement. Collect, manage, validate, and maintain research databases and project documentation to ensure data integrity and reproducibility. Conduct experiments using various tests, routines, and analyses, where procedures are new and results need to be synthesized. Prepare abstracts, oral presentations, and scientific posters for presentation at regional, national, and international scientific meetings. Compile data and generate computerized statistical data for analytical purposes using software packages, make advanced analyses, and interpret the data. Maintain detailed records of studies conducted, organize data, prepare data for computer input ,and record computer output. Author articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, or chapter publications. Co-author or author publications and co-present results with principal investigators at meetings and conferences. Prepare and submit Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, amendments, and continuing reviews while ensuring compliance with all institutional, regulatory, and ethical requirements governing clinical research. Participate in acquiring research funding including initiating and writing grant proposals. Ensure regulatory compliance of the research program by coordinating with granting agencies and regulators as required by research program. Oversee day-to-day operation of study and may supervise other research and support personnel. Provide guidance and oversight to Postdoctoral Associates, Graduate Assistants, and Designated Campus Colleagues. Oversee inventory and requisition supplies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation. Skilled in grant writing and manuscript preparation. Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings. Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R, or Stata). Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary academic environment. Minimum Qualifications PhD degree in Biological Sciences, Medicine, or relevant field of study. Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Preferred Qualifications Prior clinical research experience, preferably in pediatric, congenital heart disease, cardiothoracic surgery, or cardiology. Experience with research design, IRB submissions, data management, and statistical analysis. Familiarity with clinical databases (e.g., STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database) and outcomes research. Record of scientific writing, peer-reviewed publications, or conference presentations.
