Senior Research Assistant 1 (2 Year Term)

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the Senior Research Assistant 1 independently carries out research activities according to established protocols that support an NIH‑funded human biomarker discovery investigation housed within the School of Nursing. The position supports a project aimed at establishing cell‑free RNA‑based diagnostic tests for both clinical laboratory and point‑of‑care use to rapidly identify stroke in emergency medicine settings. This role contributes by performing advanced molecular biology workflows, maintaining a human specimen biorepository, supporting laboratory operations, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This is a 24‑month term position and plays a key role in executing experimental workflows, collaborating with research staff, and ensuring smooth laboratory operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Independently carry out experiments according to established protocol, including isolation of nucleic acids from human biofluids, quantitative PCR, digital PCR, LAMP, and generation of synthetic RNA standards (40%). Collaborate with lab staff and principal investigators to conduct experiments that supply scientific information for a larger project; provide technical expertise and coordinate molecular biology workflows (10%). Organize samples and analyze data, provide interpretation, suggest improvements to techniques, and maintain experimental data using electronic databases and a detailed electronic laboratory notebook (20%). Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities, keep the lab clean and organized, and document compliance with safety and biosafety regulations (10%). Manage lab supplies, inventory, and orders; maintain a biorepository of human specimens, ensuring proper cataloging, storage, and organization (10%). Assist in training new staff and students on laboratory operations and maintenance; direct the work of students (6%).

NON‑ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned (4%).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. It includes training new staff and directing the work of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and 6 months of related experience, or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 1 year of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within molecular biology. Ability to operate laboratory equipment and follow pre‑established guidelines. Strong theoretical and experiential understanding of basic molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and molecular cloning. Preferred experience working with human biofluids. Strong attention to scientific detail and technical problem‑solving skills. Strong organizational skills, including maintaining meticulous, complete, and easily retrievable laboratory records. Ability to effectively manage time, multi‑task, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain a clean laboratory working environment. Above‑average computing skills and comfort using digital laboratory systems, electronic inventory and record‑keeping solutions, and cloud‑based data storage. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills, as well as good interpersonal skills for interacting with individuals within and external to the university. Self‑motivation and willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, and processes as needed. Demonstrated history of supporting, educating, and advocating for all students, aligning with the university’s values, mission, and messaging, while adhering to staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest. Ability to meet consistent attendance and interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face‑to‑face. Willingness to learn and utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI).

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. The candidate may have exposure to hazards and will work with general chemicals and human biospecimens. Lab coat, gloves, and goggles will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
