TITLE: Child Nutrition Helper

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School degree or equivalent.

REPORTS TO: Cafeteria Manager

JOB GOAL: To assist in the preparation, sale, and service of food for the food service program in New Hanover County Schools.

Terms of Employment: Ten month work year/At Will/FLSA Non-Exempt

Starting Salary and/or Grade: NHCS Child Nutrition Helper Hourly Pay Scale

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board and local policy on evaluation of personnel. Revised 2.25.2016

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Follow all rules, policies and procedures of New Hanover County Schools, along with state and federal regulations relevant to the child nutrition department.
• Assist in preparation of food.
• Clean and wash dishes/equipment.
• Collect money and ID cards during meal, makes report of lunches and collections, and tabulates paid, free, and reduced price meal count.
• Participate in training programs.
• Keep area neat and clean.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by Director or supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrate functional knowledge of basic principles of food cookery.
• Demonstrate functional knowledge of food service equipment.
• Ability to be mentally alert and apply knowledge applicable to the job.
• Ability to follow written recipes and instructions.
• Ability to operate dishwasher, food grinder, mixer, meat slicer, range, ovens, refrigerator, and freezer.
• Ability to operate computer, calculator, correctly and accurately as well as make change rapidly.
• Physical ability (able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Child Nutrition Uniform Requirements

• Uniforms o All employees are to wear black uniform scrub pants, utility pants or chef pants. o No jean or knit material is allowed. o Pants must be crop length or longer. o Uniform tops will be provided by NHCS CN and shall be worn based on district uniform calendar. o College shirts may be worn on Wednesday and school logo shirts may be worn on Fridays. If you choose not to wear college or school spirit shirts NHCS uniform tops must be worn. o Uniform variance must be approved by CN Directors, Supervisor or Principal. o Hairnets/hats/visors and aprons are considered part of the uniform and should be worn with the uniform. o Shoes must be slip resistant and closed toed.
• Personal Hygiene o Child Nutrition requirements for hair and body are designed to promote a professional appearance and to decrease opportunities for employees to contaminate foods. o Employees are expected to bathe daily.
• Appearance o Employees are wearing appropriate clothing when they begin work. o Clothing and non-skid close-toed work shoes or non-skid tennis shoes should be clean. o Employees must wear hairnets, caps, or visors effectively covering and restraining clean hair. o Employees with beards or mustaches will keep them neat and trimmed. o Beard restraints must be worn by employees who have a beard. o Employees must have short and clean fingernails and may not wear nail polish or artificial nails. o Due to the possibility of physical/biological contaminants employees are NOT permitted to wear jewelry on hands, face/ears, neck or forearms except for a plain wedding band. This includes medical bracelets. o Due to the possibility of physical/biological contaminants employees are NOT permitted to wear false eyelashes.
