Job Title: Phlebotomist III – Salmon Creek
Job Description
This role offers an experienced phlebotomist the opportunity to work in a fast-paced hospital environment, focusing almost exclusively on high-volume blood collection and specimen processing. You will provide compassionate, patient-first care while performing venipuncture and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and processing according to strict protocols. The position requires Washington State phlebotomy certification, strong technical proficiency with straight and butterfly needles, and the ability to manage complex draws in a high-pressure setting. You will also support front-line laboratory operations by updating patient information, handling basic billing and insurance tasks, and maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients as they arrive in the laboratory and provide a professional, welcoming experience.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to help patients understand and feel at ease.
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, demonstrating proper technique and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect additional specimens such as urine and fecal samples when required, following established collection procedures.
- Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy before collection and processing.
- Label all specimens accurately and completely, verifying patient and test information prior to processing.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and in the correct containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.
- Package specimens safely and correctly for transport, following protocol to preserve sample quality and regulatory compliance.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Update patient information and perform data entry accurately in electronic medical records (EMR), laboratory information systems (LIS), and related technology platforms.
- Handle insurance and billing steps related to laboratory services as required by site procedures.
- Answer telephone calls promptly and professionally, including reading and relaying laboratory results when appropriate and authorized.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend required annual department trainings.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and a patient-first mindset.
- Manage a high volume of blood draws throughout the entire shift, including complex and difficult draws such as scar tissue, rolling veins, pediatric, and geriatric patients.
- Work primarily within the hospital setting, drawing in patient service centers (PSCs) or rotating through hospital floors as assigned, while remaining on-site.
- Troubleshoot and use devices such as scanners, tablets, computers, EMR systems, and LIS to support accurate specimen collection and tracking.
- Collaborate effectively with peers, participate in a peer-auditing culture, and support team members to maintain high standards of quality and safety.
- Demonstrate reliability by maintaining strong attendance, managing workload independently, and staying productive under pressure.
- Adapt to schedule changes, trainer assignments, and site needs, including supporting weekend work when available.
Essential Skills
- Washington State Certified Phlebotomist – required.
- High School Diploma or GED – required.
- At least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Proven ability to perform 20–50+ blood draws per shift in high-pressure environments.
- Demonstrated skill with difficult draws, including patients with scar tissue, rolling veins, and pediatric and geriatric populations.
- Strong venipuncture and blood collection skills with consistent accuracy and adherence to protocol.
- Experience with specimen handling, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and general specimen processing.
- Ability to navigate EMR systems and laboratory information systems (LIS), including accurate data entry of patient and specimen information.
- Capability to learn and troubleshoot scanners, tablets, computers, and other clinical devices quickly.
- Solid understanding of medical terminology related to phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices.
- Excellent customer service skills and a patient-first mindset, with the ability to ease patient anxiety and explain procedures clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in specimen labeling and requisition matching.
- Demonstrated reliability, strong attendance record, and the ability to manage workload independently.
- Positive, hardworking attitude with the initiative to solve problems and support continuous improvement.
- Ability to work effectively in diverse teams, participate in peer auditing, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
- Flexibility to support different hospital areas and adapt to trainer schedules and staffing needs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- National Phlebotomy Certification (such as NHA, ASCP or equivalent) – preferred but not required.
- Experience working in hospital-based laboratories or high-volume patient service centers.
- Familiarity with handling insurance and billing processes related to laboratory services.
- Experience providing phlebotomy services to pediatric and geriatric patients in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Proven ability to accept feedback constructively and demonstrate eagerness to learn and grow.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, contributing positively to a supportive and quality-focused culture.
- Resilience and the ability to remain calm, productive, and professional in high-pressure or rapidly changing situations.
- Willingness to support multiple sites or areas within the hospital as needed, depending on staffing and operational requirements.
- Interest in long-term growth opportunities within a large, global laboratory organization, including potential movement into lab, sales, or client services roles.

The environment is fast-paced and high-volume, requiring consistent use of EMR systems, LIS platforms, scanners, tablets, and computers to support accurate specimen collection, tracking, and reporting. You will follow strict safety protocols and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines, and work in a clinical setting that requires professional attire appropriate for a hospital laboratory, along with adherence to all infection control and safety procedures.
