Lead CNC Machinist

West Chesterfield, NH

2nd shift Monday- Thursday 3:30 pm - 2 am

The Lead CNC Machinist is a hands-on working leader responsible for operating CNC machinery, supporting efficient production, maintaining product quality, and providing day-to-day leadership and technical guidance to CNC machining personnel. Reporting to the Supervisor, the Lead CNC Machinist helps coordinate daily production activities, assigns work based on employee qualifications and production priorities, and actively participates in machining operations.

This role combines advanced CNC machining responsibilities with working-lead expectations. The Lead CNC Machinist is expected to lead by example, provide hands-on production support, assist with troubleshooting and process issues, and help ensure that daily production goals are achieved safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer, quality, and company requirements.

Safety, quality, compliance, and integrity must never be compromised to meet production targets or schedules.

Key responsibilities

CNC Machining & Production
  • Operate multiple machines simultaneously when required to maximize productivity and maintain production flow.
  • Make machine adjustments, including tool offset adjustments, within established authority to produce parts in accordance with tolerances, specifications, and production sketches.
  • Monitor machining operations and recognize conditions requiring adjustment, tool changes, tool sharpening, or other corrective action.
  • Inspect parts during production to verify compliance with dimensional and quality requirements using micrometers, verniers, gauges, fixtures, and other approved measuring equipment.
  • Maintain consistent machine practices and follow established operating procedures and standard work.
  • Take responsibility for both the quality and quantity of production.
  • Identify and respond to machining issues that could affect quality, productivity, tooling, or schedule.
  • Immediately report problems, difficulties, unusual circumstances, or conditions outside established authority to the Supervisor or appropriate personnel.
  • Support production priorities and assist in maintaining continuous workflow throughout the assigned area.
Working Lead Responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on production support and continue to perform CNC machining duties while providing leadership to other employees.
  • Lead by example in safety, quality, productivity, attendance, teamwork, housekeeping, and adherence to company policies.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and technical support to CNC machining personnel.
  • Assist employees with machining questions, process concerns, equipment issues, and troubleshooting within the scope of the position.
  • Help remove production barriers and escalate issues that cannot be resolved at the team level.
  • Support the Supervisor in maintaining effective workflow and achieving daily production objectives.
  • Step in to perform machining work when staffing shortages, production demands, training requirements, or other business needs require additional hands-on support.
Work Assignment & Resource Management
  • Assist with assigning daily work, jobs, and responsibilities based on employee qualifications, capabilities, certifications, and production priorities.
  • Help balance workloads and machine assignments to maximize productivity while maintaining quality and safety.
  • Support the movement of employees between machines, work centers, or priorities based on changing business needs and employee qualifications.
  • Coordinate with the Supervisor regarding manpower utilization, machine capacity, production priorities, and resource needs.
  • Help ensure appropriate tooling, gauges, materials, documentation, and other resources are available to support production.
Production Performance & Schedule Execution
  • Monitor daily production performance, including piece count, throughput, critical-path work, and schedule adherence.
  • Maintain accountability for completing assigned production requirements in accordance with established priorities.
  • Identify potential delays, bottlenecks, equipment issues, staffing constraints, material shortages, and other obstacles as early as possible.
  • Assist with recovery actions when production is behind schedule or priorities change.
  • Communicate production concerns promptly to the Supervisor and appropriate supporting departments.
  • Support efforts to improve machine utilization, production efficiency, and overall workflow.
Quality & Inspection
  • Inspect parts throughout production to ensure compliance with drawings, production sketches, specifications, tolerances, and applicable quality requirements.
  • Use appropriate measuring equipment, including micrometers, verniers, gauges, fixtures, and other inspection tools.
  • Recognize dimensional or process conditions that may affect product quality and take appropriate action within established authority.
  • Immediately communicate quality concerns, suspected nonconformances, or unusual conditions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain a culture in which quality is never sacrificed for production speed or output.
  • Follow all applicable quality procedures, work instructions, customer requirements, and aerospace manufacturing standards.
Safety & Risk Awareness
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment through personal example and consistent adherence to safety requirements.
  • Follow all company safety, security, housekeeping, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good machine practices at all times.
  • Identify unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, and workplace hazards and report them promptly.
  • Ensure safety, quality, compliance, and integrity are never compromised to achieve production goals.
Training & Employee Development
  • Provide day-to-day coaching and technical guidance to less experienced CNC machinists and operators.
  • Demonstrate proper machining techniques, machine practices, inspection methods, and standard work.
  • Support cross-training initiatives to improve workforce flexibility and machine coverage.
  • Assist the Supervisor with onboarding and training of new employees.
  • Reinforce established procedures and expectations and communicate opportunities for additional training or development.
Problem Solving & Troubleshooting
  • Respond promptly to machine, tooling, quality, or production issues.
  • Recognize when tool sharpening, offset changes, tooling changes, or other adjustments may be necessary.
  • Assist with identifying the cause of production problems and implementing appropriate corrective actions within established authority.
  • Escalate problems that require Supervisor, Setup, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, or other departmental support.
  • Help minimize downtime and production interruptions through proactive communication and problem solving.
Documentation & Production Records
  • Maintain accurate production cards, records, labor reporting, and other required production data.
  • Ensure production information is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Communicate relevant production information, issues, and status updates to the Supervisor.
  • Complete required documentation in accordance with company procedures.
Housekeeping & Equipment Care
  • Maintain assigned work areas, machines, equipment, tooling, and inspection equipment in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Practice good housekeeping and maintain an organized, safe, and efficient work environment.
  • Properly care for and use machines, tools, gauges, fixtures, and other company equipment.
  • Report equipment or tooling concerns that could affect safety, quality, or production.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Maintain effective communication with the Supervisor, Setup Personnel, Quality, Maintenance, Engineering, Planning, and other departments as needed.
  • Communicate production priorities, changes, quality concerns, staffing issues, and operational challenges promptly.
  • Work collaboratively to maintain production flow and resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Recognize when a situation requires escalation and involve the appropriate personnel without unnecessary delay.
Performance & Accountability

The Lead CNC Machinist is accountable for supporting and driving performance in the following areas:

  • Safe operation of CNC machinery and adherence to all safety requirements.
  • Product quality and compliance with specifications, tolerances, drawings, and applicable procedures.
  • Daily production output, including piece count, throughput, and critical-path work.
  • Schedule adherence and timely completion of assigned production priorities.
  • Proper machine operation, tool usage, offsets, and in-process adjustments within established authority.
  • Accurate and timely inspection of parts throughout production.
  • Early identification and escalation of production, quality, tooling, equipment, material, and staffing constraints.
  • Effective utilization of machines, manpower, tooling, and materials.
  • Maintaining accurate production records and required documentation.
  • Providing hands-on technical support and leadership to other CNC personnel.
  • Supporting training, cross-training, and employee development in conjunction with the Supervisor.
  • Maintaining clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Supporting continuous improvement and identifying opportunities to improve productivity, quality, workflow, and efficiency.
  • Demonstrating leadership that consistently upholds safety, quality, compliance, and integrity while achieving operational objectives.
Qualifications & Technical Competencies
  • Demonstrated experience operating CNC machining equipment in a production manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of CNC machining processes, machine operation, tooling, offsets, and production practices.
  • Ability to read and understand production sketches, drawings, specifications, tolerances, and work instructions.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, gauges, and fixtures.
  • Ability to identify machining issues and recognize when adjustments, tooling changes, or tool sharpening are required.
  • Ability to operate multiple machines simultaneously when required.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts.

Leadership Expectations

The Lead CNC Machinist is expected to function as a working technical leader , not solely as a coordinator. The position requires the ability to balance hands-on machining responsibilities with leadership, production support, problem solving, and accountability.

Requirements:

Job Specifications:

High School Diploma and proven experience (typically 3+ years) in the machining field or equivalent knowledge.

2-5 years set up experience preferred.

Strong commitment to safety and the ability to foster a safety-first culture.

Strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire and guide teams to prioritize safety in all aspects of operations.

An understanding of manufacturing processes, production scheduling and operations, industry safety standards, and quality control methodologies.

Working knowledge of risk assessments, hazard identification, and lean and continuous improvement initiatives.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills.

Proficiency with computer skills, MS Office, Manufacturing software, etc.
