NARCOTICS UNIT COMMANDER, Sheriff's Office

Summary The Narcotics Unit Commander will be responsible for assisting with the daily functions of the Sheriff's Office including commanding the Task Force and reports directly to the Tarrant County Sheriff and the Task Force Board of Governors on all significant matters. The Commander is responsible for anticipating problems and sponsoring project directional change as needed. This position is responsible for establishing goals and ensuring they are met. The Commander oversees all Task Force operations including the control and disposition of seized property, accounting, analysis and reporting. The Commander communicates frequently with the area's law enforcement executives and statewide narcotic agencies to maintain liaisons and share narcotic enforcement trends and issues. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises one or more employees in the Sheriff's Office. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employee(s). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the county's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include including interviewing, hiring, and training employee(s); planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Establishes unit goals and ensures they are met. Oversees unit’s narcotic enforcement and prevention activities. Coordinates narcotic enforcement activities and issues with area law enforcement administrators. Develops and monitors annual budget goals for the unit. Controls and oversees the disposition of seized property. Develops and updates standard operating policies and procedures. Reports to management on task force issues and budget requests. Coordinates activities and issues with statewide narcotic units. Coordinates activities and issues with federal law enforcement units. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to stay organized and know how to prioritize the workload. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Competency with computers and Microsoft Office 365 Suite. Advanced analytical skills. Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences or related fields or qualifying equivalent experience. Ten (10) full-time years of work experience in law enforcement investigative and intelligence fields Five (5) full-time years in managing and supervising major unit investigative or intelligence activities. Must hold a Master Texas Peace Officer's license. Must become NCIC/TCIC certified within one (1) year of employment. Preferred Requirements Specific knowledge or experience in multi-agency covert investigative task force operations is preferred.

Physical Demands And Work Environment & Other Requirements While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, lift, push and pull. Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, evenings and nights. There is exposure to household type cleaning agents (such as diluted bleach, alcohol based window cleaner, chlorine based cleanser); and occasional exposure to pesticides. There is occasional exposure to inmate control devices that emit pepper agents via aerosol spray, gel or foam. There is the potential of exposure to toxic smoke. Must demonstrate distant and near vision of 20/30 corrected or uncorrected in each eye and must be able to read typewritten material with or without glasses. Must be able to see without glasses (with or without the use of contact lenses) in order to wear an air mask; and in order to be able to see to defend themselves and others; applicants with uncorrected vision worse than 20/100 (Snellen) must wear contact lens while working; Must be able to distinguish basic colors (without the use of x-chrome lenses); Must be able to hear the conversational voice, with or without the use of hearing aid. Must be able to lift an approximately 40 lb Self Contained Breathing Apparatus for emergencies during fires; and, must be able to partially lift and drag an average weight person of approximately 185 lbs, a distance of 75 feet for the evacuation of individuals unable to assist themselves during emergencies; Must be physically able to restrain hostile and combative subjects; Must physically be able to participate in defensive tactics training and annual refresher training: Must be able to work any shift; and, Must be able to communicate in clear English during emergencies.
