Athletic Trainer-Certified (Wahoo Public) Summary The Athletic Trainer-Certified provides athletic training services to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician, and in accordance with the state athletic training practice act. Monitors and provides game/contest coverage for athletes at assigned schools. Designs and implements preventative injury programs; identifies, evaluates and provides immediate care/referral for athletic injuries. Acts as a liaison between family physicians, medical specialists, school representatives, athletes, their parents, coaches and athletic directors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Provides athlete consultation, practice coverage and injury tracking documentation for athletes at assigned schools; advises and reviews pre-season, in-season and post-season strength and conditioning programs. Provides game/contest coverage for assigned schools as scheduled; notifies coaches and athletic director of athletes who are not medically eligible to compete. Provides medical coverage for assigned school athletic camps during summer months in consultation with the Athletic Training Supervisor, athletic director, and coaches. Reviews pre-game and practice taping and preparation with athletes to provide information regarding injury risks; makes recommendations for athlete safety and hydration based on environmental conditions. Acts as liaison between physicians, medical specialists, school representatives, athletes, their parents, coaches and athletic directors. Provides immediate and emergency care when needed following emergency action protocols and treatment. Implements and communicates the use of the XLNTBrain concussion management system to all athletes, coaching staff, and support staff. Develops treatment programs in accordance with findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or treating physician; schedules athlete treatments and/or interventions as necessary per established guidelines; assesses athlete’s status in response to treatment and modifies program as appropriate and/or in conjunction with treating physician. Refers athletes for appropriate diagnostic and follow-up procedures and subsequent injury tracking; maintains accurate records/documentation of injuries, treatments and provides insurance claim forms for sports injuries treated by a physician. Develops and maintains a budget for athletic training supplies; recommends new equipment and supplies to ensure optimum quality of athlete’s care. Follows established policies and procedures specific to the athletic training room and the athletic healthcare program. Presents educational programs for the healthy and injured athletes, e.g., alcohol and other drug abuse, performance anxiety, nutrition. Provides in-service education to the members of the staff and community as directed by the Athletic Training Supervisor. Reports for event coverage and attends meetings at designated time. May provide athletic training at youth sport venues; conduct sports medicine clinics and seminars; provide coverage at athletic camps and local sporting events within the Wahoo Public High School system. Assists with the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures and emergency action plan of the athletic healthcare program as requested by the Athletic Training Supervisor. Works in conjunction with Athletic Training Supervisor for strategic planning, growth, and development to stay on the cutting edge of athletic training. Assists the Athletic Training Supervisor to develop, maintain, review and revise departmental policy and procedure manuals annually or as needed. Attend the Therapy and Wellness department meetings at direction of Director of Therapy and Wellness. Assist with the Edge Wellness programs as requested by the supervisor within the Wahoo Public High School system. Practice the proper fire, safety and disaster procedures as set forth by SMC. Participate in all quality, safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department. Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer. Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities. Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor. Other duties as assigned. Requirements Knowledge of athletic training protocols and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Knowledge of the principals of growth and development over the life span. Knowledge of anatomical structure and function, physiological and biomechanical demands and response to exercise. Knowledge of the nutritional and hydration demands of athletes. Knowledge of athletic event play rules, equipment and safety requirements. Skill in performing prescribed treatments and recommendations by team/program/event physician. Skill in recognizing, evaluating and providing immediate care of athletic injuries. Ability to perform prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aide) and reconditioning of athletic injuries. Ability to maintain confidentiality relative to sensitive information. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to use, demonstrate and maintain athletic training equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to perform proper taping, strapping, bracing and fitting of athletic equipment. Supervisory Responsibilities None.
