Laboratory Supervisor
Under general direction of Pathology management, supervise and coordinate daily functions and activities in one of the various clinical laboratories throughout the Medical System. Ensures the provision of laboratory services to meet the needs of patients as ordered by medical staff and performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices, as well as, regulations stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
- Confers with Assistant Directors and the Clinical Director where appropriate, regarding laboratory operation and the development, implementation, review and update of written policies, procedures, and protocols to provide for optimum functioning of the lab.
- Assists the Assistant Directors or Clinical Director with the formulation of policies, procedures and protocols relating to specimen processing, instrument and equipment maintenance and general operations. (To include safety and disaster preparedness.) Recommends changes in clinical laboratory procedures where appropriate.
- Updates, at least annually, the laboratory operating procedure manual.
- Recommends the addition or modification of laboratory equipment, as necessary.
- Ensures compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies through periodic inspections and observation of practices. Takes appropriate action when violations occur.
- Assists in the evaluation of laboratory performance and recommends, initiates and effects measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies. Assists in the determination of need for development of new services.
- Directs, supervises and coordinates the technical functions and activities in the laboratory, including, selection, installation, maintenance, quality control and training for highly sophisticated instrumentation and laboratory equipment; use of chemicals and related supplies used in the testing process.
- Monitors the quality control of laboratory operations, supplies and equipment. Audits validity and accuracy of test results obtained by staff, regularly.
- Monitors instrument maintenance, quality control and proficiency testing ensuring accuracy, efficiency and documentation/reporting of the same.
- Provides expertise by counseling staff and solving problems related to instrument or reagent or, in general, other causes for failure in the testing or analysis of specimens.
- Addresses clinical laboratory computer system/software problems and may assist in formulating programs for different on-line instrumentation. Utilizes hospital computer systems to manage patient information.
- Supervises laboratory personnel within the assigned lab who conduct routine and/or specialized tests and analyses of blood, body fluid or human tissue specimens ensuring maximum productivity and effectiveness.
- Participates in hiring, evaluating work performance, discipline and firing, if necessary, of subordinate staff in conjunction with respective Assistant Director, Hospital Labs and in accordance with established Medical System policies.
- Prepares staff work schedules to meet the needs of the assigned laboratory.
- Develops and assigns work tasks to maximize productivity and service, to include research and investigation of new instruments and procedures as well as intensive problem-solving investigations.
- Develops and implements training and continuing education programs to train employees on proper use of and care for instrumentation, and in laboratory procedures.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings in conjunction with the Assistant Director, Hospital Labs where appropriate.
- Coordinates communication between laboratory personnel and medical and nursing staff to relate operational procedures, mediate differences and to resolve problems.
- Communicates regularly with medical and nursing staff to address any special needs of the lab required for patient care.
- Maintains inventory of all consumable items, and prepares monthly supply orders to ensure adequate amount of reagents and supplies are available when needed.
- Handles inventory/supply problems or questions, as needed.
- Keeps statistics on inventory usage.
- Maintains documentation of department activities, regularly, for reporting purposes and for modification and improvement of department operations.
- Reviews testing and quality control activities, daily.
- Reviews productivity reports, including individual employee and departmental production. Oversees Epic exceptions, makes recommendations for CPT coding/RVU assignments when applicable.
- Reviews instrument and equipment management including frequency or use and preventive maintenance.
- Assists in preparation of quality assurance and safety activity reports.
- Reviews monthly in-service education on staff.
- Submits to management significant departmental operations data (narrative and statistical) for administrative reports, as required.
- Keeps current with trends and advances in methods of clinical laboratory testing and procedures.
- Maintains an active membership in relevant professional organizations.
- Attends educational programs and seminars focusing on the management and technical aspects of specimen processing and laboratory procedures for professional development.
- Reads health care and clinical laboratory related literature.
- May assist the Laboratory Assistant Director with the preparation and management of the operating and capital expenditure budget, in some labs.
- Projects annual anticipated expenses based on prior activity and capital needs.
- Allocates expenditures based on needs and available funds. (Generates on-line requisitions for the purchase of supplies, instruments and equipment.)
- Assists with monitoring activity and adjusts plan, monthly, to assure that the projected budget is met.
- Assumes responsibility for the assigned laboratory in the absence of the Assistant Director, Hospital Labs.
- Assists in the training, teaching and evaluating of Medical Technology / Histotechnologists students and their performance within the rotation to the assigned lab.
- Performs responsibilities of Medical Technologists / Histotechnologists during periods of significant staff shortage.
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology or Chemistry, or equivalent is required. Advanced course work/education in the particular area of specialization is required. For Histology: Associate (AA) or Bachelor's (BA or BS) degree from an accredited Histotechnologists program, OR completion of a certificate program or a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician / Histotechnologist training program with at least 7 years of comprehensive histology laboratory experience OR on-the-job training with at least 7 years of comprehensive histology laboratory experience. Lab experience must be in a Histopathology Lab in the U.S., Canada, or an accredited laboratory. For Cytology: Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology from an accredited Cytotechnology program. Certification from a nationally recognized accrediting agency in the particular area of specialization is required. Five years progressively responsible experience as a Medical Technologist / Histotechnologist / Histotechnician / Cytotechnologist within the specific laboratory unit, performing laboratory testing and evaluation duties, or equivalent, is required. In addition, a minimum of one-year lead worker responsibility, overseeing the work of Medical Technologists / Medical Laboratory Technicians / Histotechnologists / Histotechnicians / Cytotechnologists and laboratory support personnel is required.
Proficient knowledge of clinical laboratory process, testing and analytical procedures, techniques and quality assurance. Knowledge of supervisory skills and directing the work of Medical Technologists / Histotechnologists / Cytotechnologists and lower level laboratory staff, assign work priorities, audit work quality, orient and train, evaluate and discipline appropriately as directed by the Laboratory Assistant Director Proficiency in use of computerized systems for tracking and evaluating laboratory test results and managing patient information, and for calibrating laboratory equipment. Ability to read, write, speak English and perform mathematical and statistical operations for recording and evaluating lab results, including, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to handle potentially infectious materials, such as, blood and body fluid specimens observing proper safety regulations and procedures. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to work with medical or nursing staff, in order to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens or lab tests. Ability to ensure effective work of laboratory staff through guidance and training. Ability to properly record and evaluate test results and quality control statistics. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific and population-specific needs.
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
