As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of roadway maintenance duties under limited supervision to help ensure safe and reliable travel for the public.This position is part of the Maintenance Program located in Kemmerer, Wyoming.Kemmerer is best known as the home of the original J.C. Penney store and offers a welcoming small-town atmosphere. The community hosts two popular family-friendly events each year—Fossil Fest and the Oyster Ridge Music Festival, Wyoming's largest free music festival. Explore our Total Compensation Calculator: Resource Contact: View phone number on click.appcast.io / Terra Poling / View email address on click.appcast.io Functions:Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficientlyAssists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipmentUnder limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devicesOperates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surfaceResponsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markingsResponsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirementsAttends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skillsCommunicates information in order to update others' status and/or process effectivenessUtilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipmentPerforms duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessaryResponsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipmentPreferences:Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment. Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary. Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT. Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving. Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification. Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.Knowledge:Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standardsKnowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control proceduresKnowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures.Knowledge of hazardous materials response proceduresKnowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipmentKnowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractorsKnowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activitiesKnowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephonesMinimum Qualifications:Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire OR Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering) Experience: 0-1 year of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hirePhysical Working Conditions:Frequent use of manual and powered hand toolsDaily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipmentFrequent exposure to hazardous materialsAbility to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independentlyAbility to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of timeWork in adverse environmental conditions, which may include but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hailAbility to walk long periods of time on even and uneven groundWorking around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipmentNotes:FLSA: Non-ExemptWYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify that candidates possess a valid driver's license.Individuals in these positions must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or physical and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work without an acceptable excuse will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.Individuals in these must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.Occasional overnight travel is required.Individuals in these positions may be asked to obtain water certifications if necessary.Individuals in these positions must have the ability to successfully complete the following training provided by WYDOT: Certification to operate specified equipment, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR certification, and Flagger certification.Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:Temporary employees accepting a full-time position.Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, funds will be recouped from final pay.Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
