Location: Indianapolis, IN (Onsite)
Job Type: 7 months (with possible extension)

Pay Rate: $$/hr on 1099




Job Summary
The Visual Language Specialist will serve as an expert in American Sign Language (ASL) and visual communication, supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families. This role involves assessments, training, mentoring, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to enhance language development and educational outcomes.



Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct multidisciplinary assessments for deaf and hard-of-hearing children across Indiana
  • Provide preliminary assessment results to parents and professionals
  • Perform ASL language evaluations using appropriate/adaptive tools
  • Prepare and submit detailed written assessment reports
  • Participate in case conferences and represent the assessment team
  • Develop and expand ASL and visual language assessment tools
  • Create and share educational resources on ASL development and bilingualism
  • Deliver training programs for families and professionals
  • Coordinate Deaf Mentor and School-Age Mentor programs
  • Provide consultation on educational goals, strategies, and accommodations
  • Support teachers and early intervention professionals with ASL strategies
  • Observe students in educational settings and recommend improvements
  • Collaborate with interpreters for appropriate language matching
  • Participate in organizational initiatives, committees, and professional development
  • Represent the Center in meetings and public functions
  • Perform additional duties including transition support for post-secondary students
Required Qualifications
  • Strong background in American Sign Language (ASL) linguistics
  • Fluency in:
  1. Expressive ASL
  2. Receptive ASL
  3. ASL Grammar
  4. ASL Literacy
  • Experience teaching reading and English to deaf/hard-of-hearing children
  • Ability to assess and evaluate ASL competency levels
  • Knowledge of child development and adolescent behavior
  • Strong written communication and reporting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ASL tactile skills (for deafblind students)
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary educational teams
  • Familiarity with early intervention and school-based services
Work Expectations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, families, and state agencies
  • Understanding of federal and state special education laws
  • Maintain professionalism in all communications and reporting
  • Participate in continuous improvement and program development
