Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Summary This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after a complete review. Qualifications United States Citizenship required. Non‑citizens may be considered only if no qualified citizens can be recruited. Completion of a full‑time diagnostic radiologic technology program of at least 24 months (or equivalent) and an associate degree or certificate accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or a DOE‑recognized agency. Certification in general radiologic technology (ARRT R) required. Advanced ARRT certification (ARRT MR or equivalent) required for MRI assignments. Proficient in spoken and written English as required by federal regulations. Minimum one year of experience at GS‑9 level in diagnostic radiologic technology, demonstrating clinical competencies including patient care, safety, imaging techniques, and radiation protection. Ability to balance patient and staff needs, assess contraindications, and apply basic first aid and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural patient care, radiation protection standards, imaging physics, and patient positioning for modalities including CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, and mammography. Demonstrated technical KSAs: use of advanced imaging software, awareness of exposure monitoring, and recommendations to reduce patient dose. Responsibilities Safeguard the MRI scanning environment to maintain patient and staff safety. Observe and enforce patient safety guidelines and departmental policies. Contribute to the development of MRI policies and procedures in accordance with ACR, Joint Commission, and VHA standards. Develop, maintain, and improve examination protocols in collaboration with the radiologist to ensure optimal image quality and patient benefit. Train personnel on MRI principles, procedures, equipment, and safety. Explain imaging methodology, benefits, and limitations to patients and providers. Verify patient identity and obtain informed consent, screen for contraindications, and provide pre‑scan instructions. Prepare, label, and administer contrast agents under physician orders, maintaining IV competency and appropriate timing. Position patients accurately, adjust imaging planes, and control MRI parameters to achieve diagnostic image quality. Apply radiation protection principles to minimize exposure and monitor parameters. Participate in quality control, report deviations, and test equipment for reliability. Maintain logs of equipment malfunctions and collaborate with biomedical engineering and service personnel.
