Unit Information

The position is within a Cardiovascular Progressive Care unit located in Asheville, NC. The primary patient population includes individuals undergoing cardiovascular and vascular surgeries, such as:

• Open heart surgeries (CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR, etc.)
• Thoracic surgeries (lobectomy, thoracotomy, etc.)
• Esophagogastrectomy
• Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) repair (open and endovascular)
• Femoral-Popliteal (fem-pop) bypass
• Carotid endarterectomies

This unit also accommodates overflow medical cardiology patients with various diagnoses, including heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block.

General Information

The unit features:

• 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds
• Approximately 100 staff members

Staffing Structure

Day Shift:

• 1 Charge RN (routinely out of staffing)
• 13 RNs
• 4 PCTs
• 1.33 HUCs

Night Shift:

• 1 Charge RN (routinely out of staffing)
• 13 RNs
• 4 PCTs
• 0.33 HUCs

Patient Ratios

• 1:5 patients per RN
• 1:13 for PCTs

Equipment Used

The unit utilizes the following equipment:

• Baxter IV pumps
• CADD epidural pumps
• Various patient lifts

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system: Cerner

Hiring Profile

Required Skills

• Stepdown experience
• Telemetry experience

Preferred Skills

• Experience with CV surgery and vascular surgery populations within the last year, specifically open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA repair, and fem-pop bypass
• CVICU experience

Typical Procedures

Staff members may perform the following procedures:

• Epidural management
• Chest tube management
• Tube feedings
• IV gluccommander
• Management of cardiac medications (e.g., phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)

Personality Fit

The ideal candidate will be a team player, adaptable to a fast-paced environment, and flexible with scheduling.

Required Certifications

• ACLS
• BLS

Floating Areas

The nurse may float to any stepdown (1:5 ratios) or medical-surgical unit (1:6-7 ratios) as well as the ER inpatient holding area (1:6 ratios).

Dress Code

Scrub colors/attire include:

• Navy scrubs
• White tops with navy bottoms
• All white scrubs

Weekend and Holiday Requirements

The position requires a minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday, day/night) over a 6-week schedule, and the candidate must be flexible to work on holidays.
