DIRECTOR OF STEWARDSHIP AND LEADERSHIP GIVING (TLCF)
$500 - $2,499 per monthThe TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors -Los Angeles, or Santa Cruz, CA
DIRECTOR OF STEWARDSHIP AND LEADERSHIP GIVING (TLCF) Posted on January 09, 2018 The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors seeks an experienced development professional to join our team as the Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving. The successful candidate will be a skilled relationship builder who understands how to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors who care about health-related issues. The Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving will have the opportunity to create and implement a plan for strengthening relationships with existing major donors and growing the organization’s community of support. This person will spend approximately 40% of their time travelling around the country to meet with donors who are making this important work possible, most frequently on the West Coast and in New England. When not travelling, the Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving may choose to be based out of either Los Angeles or the Bay Area (Santa Cruz) office, including some time working remotely from their home. The TLC Foundation’s mission is to end the suffering caused by body-focused repetitive behaviors, such as skin picking and hair pulling. This is a newly created role reporting to the Executive Director with the goal of building upon the success of the organization’s first-ever major gifts campaign, which raised over $2.5M to fund groundbreaking research into promising new treatments, with the hope of one day finding a cure. The TLC Foundation Sharing Knowledge. Supporting Recovery. Finding a Cure. The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors(BFRBs) is a donor-supported, nonprofit organization devoted to ending the suffering caused by hair pulling disorder, skin picking disorder, and related body-focused repetitive behaviors. TLC takes a comprehensive approach to its mission: creating a community of support for affected individuals; providing referrals to treatment specialists and resources; training professionals to recognize and treat BFRBs; and directing research into their causes, treatment, and prevention. When TLC was founded in 1991, these disorders were virtually unheard of. There were no educational resources, no support community, and no clinicians or researchers who were expert in the field. Thanksto the support of TLC members, over the past 25 years, hundreds of therapists have begun specializing in BFRBs treatment. Skin picking disorder became a recognized disorder in the DSM-5, the comprehensive diagnostic mental health manual. Support groups have formed and thrived all over the U.S. and increasingly, around the world. Treatment approaches have improved greatly. Most crucially, millions of people have learned that they are not alone, helping to break the cycle of shame and embarrassment that can lead to painful isolation and emotional distress. With an annual budget of approximately $1M, TLC is poised to grow its impact over the next several years through new outreach, treatment, and prevention strategies with the goal of more powerfully and compassionately serving people across the country who are affected by this condition. TLC currently has a staff of nine full and part-time employees. The main office is located in Santa Cruz, CA and the Executive Director and Annual Fund Director work out of Los Angeles. The Board of Directors lives throughout the United States, as do the donors. For more information about the TLC Foundation, visit our website: Key Responsibilities of the Position The Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving will report to the Executive Director and provide leadership and direction to a comprehensive donor stewardship program, having primary responsibility for major gift cultivation and donor stewardship for the organization. Key responsibilities include: Manage a major gift portfolio of approximately 100-150 donors, with a focus on increasing philanthropic support from individuals and families of gifts of $5,000+ Conduct approximately 100 in-person donor visits per year with TLC donors across the country. New England, Los Angeles and San Francisco are largest concentrations of donor areas, with others spread across the United States. Establish and maintain effective systems for deepening major donor partnerships, including prospecting, engagement, solicitation and stewardship activities. Orchestrate effective use of Executive Director's time in advancing relationships with top donors. Develop effective and compelling case statement materials and proposals for donor solicitations. Oversee wealth screening and prospect research activities to identify major gift opportunities and inform solicitations. Collaborate with the Annual Fund Director and other staff to identify key opportunities for building the pipeline of prospective new major donor relationships, including overseeing the "mid-tier" solicitation and stewardship program for individuals contributing $500-$2499. Create and manage gift agreements. Report regularly to Executive Director and Board on progress towards overall fundraising goals and major gift goals in particular. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is inspired by TLC's mission of ending the suffering of individuals and families facing these disorders, and is committed to supporting the organization as it grows and expands its impact. TLC is a particularly 'heart-centered' organization, with deep compassion and kindness at its core. The Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving will thrive in this environment, and possess genuine caring and concern for those suffering from BFRBs. Prior familiarity with BFRBs, and/or experience fundraising for sensitive health-related issues, is a plus. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of non-profit fundraising experience, preferably with a successful track record of stewarding donors and asking for and securing major gifts. We seek a fundraiser who is self-motivated, highly organized, and able to see the big picture while driving to results. Facility with information technology, ideally Salesforce and Constant Contact, is required. The nature of this position requires candidates who can thrive working independently and remotely, while also collaborating with the TLC board and staff teams and connecting on a personal level with the donors themselves. It is therefore essential that candidates bring strong written and verbal communication skills, and are especially adept at building strong relationships even when in-person meetings are not possible. Candidates should also be confident in one-on-one settings, and comfortable when talking about subjects that may be quite personal and emotionally sensitive. An ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds in different parts of the country will be a key to success. Compensation and Benefits This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Executive Director. The organization is based in Santa Cruz, CA but the Executive Director works out of the Los Angeles area, and the Director of Stewardship and Leadership Giving may choose to be based either in the Bay Area or the Los Angeles area, with the option of some time working remotely from home. It requires a willingness to travel approximately 40% of the time for donor meetings and appointments in other regions of the United States. The expected salary range is between $65,000 - $72,000, depending on experience and skills. The TLC Foundation provides a generous benefits package including medical and dental insurance, as well as paid vacation, sick and holiday time, and an IRA contribution after one year of employment. We place a high value on work-life balance and aim to be flexible and family-friendly whenever possible. The search for this position is being facilitated by Clover Search Works , a search firm that provides a full range of search and leadership transition services to nonprofit organizations in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Clover Search Works is honored to work with the TLC Foundation and is working hard to recruit a fundraising professional to join their team who is passionate about advancing TLC's mission.
