Travel RN – Operating Room (OR)

Unit Overview

• Operating Rooms: 13
• Minor Procedure Rooms: 2
• Average Daily Surgical Volume: 60–70 cases

Required Certifications

• BLS – Required
• ACLS – Preferred
• PALS – Required only for PACU assignments

Surgical Specialties

The OR performs a wide variety of procedures including:

• General Surgery
• OB/GYN
• Neurosurgery
• Vascular Surgery
• Endovascular Surgery
• Orthopedics
• Plastic Surgery
• ENT
• Ophthalmology
• Interventional Pain
• Da Vinci Robotic Surgery

Not performed:

• Bariatric Surgery
• Transplant Surgery

Specialty Teams

• Cardiac Team
• Orthopedic Team
• Vascular/Endovascular Team
• General Surgery Team

Required Experience

• Strong Operating Room background preferred
• Experience circulating multiple specialties
• RN scrubbing experience is a plus, but not required

Leadership & Support

• Dedicated Charge Nurse manages the OR board
• Travelers are not assigned as Charge Nurse

Documentation

• Epic EMR

Scheduling

• Various shift options based on department needs
• Specific shift assigned during the prescreen process
• Scheduling requests are considered if submitted before scheduling
• Block scheduling may be accommodated if staffing allows

Call Requirements

Weekday Call

• Rotating weekday call schedule
• General OR RNs typically take 2–3 weekday call shifts per week
• Cardiac, Orthopedic, and Endovascular teams may take more frequent call

Weekend Call

• Typically every 4th–5th weekend
• Approximately 1–2 weekend call rotations every 6-week schedule
• Weekend call generally consists of 3–4 call shifts

Call Times

• Evening Call: 6:45 PM – 11:15 PM
• General OR first call: 7:15 PM – 10:45 PM
• Midnight call: 10:45 PM – 6:45 AM (usually covered by core staff)

Response Time

• 30-minute response time
• Hospital call rooms available for staff while on call

Holiday Requirement

• Holiday coverage is assigned through the call rotation

Floating

May float based on competency to:

• General OR
• Endoscopy
• Vascular
• Urology
• Gynecology
• Orthopedics
• Cardiac service (if experienced)

Dress Code

• Hospital-provided surgical scrubs
