Cook Helper - University of Rochester

Location: Rochester, NY

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Datrose is hiring Cook Helpers to support food service operations at the University of Rochester.

This is a great opportunity for someone with commercial food service experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced kitchen environment. As a Cook Helper, you'll assist cooks with food preparation, gather ingredients and supplies, help prepare meals, and may independently handle grill or broiler duties.

What You'll Do

As a Cook Helper, your responsibilities may include:

• Assist cooks with preparing meals and gathering ingredients, supplies, utensils, and equipment

• Monitor foods while cooking and check for proper progress and doneness

• Adjust cooking time or temperature and add ingredients or seasonings as directed

• Prepare beverages and other food items as needed

• Prepare short-order foods using grills, broilers, fryers, or similar equipment

• Peel, wash, trim, slice, and cut vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, and other ingredients

• Measure and mix ingredients according to established or computer-generated recipes

• Portion and prepare food for service

• Assist with patient trays, food carts, containers, and meal service

• Properly wrap, store, process, or discard returned and leftover food

• Maintain proper food storage and handling procedures

• Clean and sanitize utensils, equipment, cooking areas, and workstations

• Follow all established food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards

Equipment You May Use

Depending on your assignment, you may work with:

• Ovens and ranges

• Grills and broilers

• Fryers and steamers

• Steam kettles and tilting skillets

• Mixers, blenders, grinders, slicers, and choppers

• Woks and other commercial cooking equipment

• Knives, pots, pans, utensils, and measuring equipment

What We're Looking For

• At least 1 year of commercial food service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Knowledge of basic food preparation methods

• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English

• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions

• Comfortable working with commercial kitchen equipment

• Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to lift approximately 40-50 pounds

• Dependable attendance and a strong team-oriented work ethic
