OVERVIEW

Project Diakonia equips underserved young adults ages 16-24 with construction training, employment support, and career navigation. The Associate Construction Instructor supports our evening program by reinforcing approved curriculum, safe work practices, jobsite expectations, and the workplace behaviors participants need for long-term employment.

Working alongside the Lead Instructor and in close communication with the Career Navigator, this role combines hands-on construction instruction with mentorship and classroom leadership. The right person brings construction credibility, a genuine heart for young adults facing barriers, and the ability to correct directly without shaming, de-escalate tension without avoiding accountability, and model professional conduct consistently.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist the Lead Instructor in delivering and reinforcing Project Diakonia's approved construction curriculum.
• Demonstrate foundational construction skills, safe tool use, material handling, measurement, and quality workmanship within your level of competence.
• Guide individuals and small groups through hands-on practice, check for understanding, and provide timely, respectful feedback.
• Monitor the training area, stop unsafe conduct immediately, and reinforce PPE, tool accountability, cleanup, and jobsite expectations.
• Support classroom and shop setup, material organization, cleanup, and accurate tool inventory.
• Build trusting, professional relationships while maintaining clear adult-student boundaries.
• Coach punctuality, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and personal responsibility.
• Address disruptive or unprofessional behavior early using calm, firm coaching and effective de-escalation.
• Communicate attendance, behavior, strengths, safety concerns, and barriers promptly to the Lead Instructor and Career Navigator.
• Complete assigned attendance, progress notes, and incident documentation accurately and on time.
• Recognize student growth and support consistent engagement, attendance, and program completion .

SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE LOOKS LIKE

• Students demonstrate safer construction practices, stronger workplace behaviors, and increased confidence.
• Classroom concerns are addressed early, directly, and consistently before they become larger problems.
• The Lead Instructor and Career Navigator receive timely information, and students complete the program better prepared for employment or an apprenticeship.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrated hands-on construction or skilled-trade experience and the ability to explain foundational skills safely and clearly.
• Experience coaching, supervising, teaching, training, or mentoring others; experience with young adults is preferred.
• Ability to remain firm, calm, respectful, and professional during behavioral challenges and difficult conversations.
• Strong communication, teamwork, judgment, documentation, and professional-boundary skills.
• OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain it shortly after hire, plus the ability to meet background-screening requirements consistent with applicable law.
• Ability to work in classroom and light-construction environments, stand and move throughout class, use assigned

HOURS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position averages 15 hours per week, primarily Monday through Wednesday evenings, with additional preparation, documentation, meetings, or training as scheduled. Consistent availability throughout each eight-week cohort is essential. Work may include noise, dust, outdoor conditions, and required personal protective equipment.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

• Pay Range: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
• In accordance with Colorado law, part-time employees accrue paid sick leave under the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA) at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. This position is also covered under the Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program.
