Pulmonary Pathologist

The Pulmonary Pathologist is responsible for diagnosing diseases of the lung and respiratory system through the examination of tissue samples, cytology specimens, and other laboratory data. This role involves evaluating biopsies, surgical resections, and cytologic specimens related to pulmonary and thoracic pathology. The Pulmonary Pathologist collaborates with pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnoses that guide patient care and treatment. The position also supports laboratory quality initiatives, participates in multidisciplinary conferences, and may contribute to research and education.

Key Responsibilities

• Examine and interpret pulmonary tissue specimens including lung biopsies, bronchial biopsies, and surgical resections.
• Evaluate cytology specimens such as bronchial washings, brushings, fine-needle aspirations, and pleural fluid samples.
• Provide accurate diagnostic reports related to pulmonary diseases including infections, inflammatory conditions, interstitial lung disease, and thoracic malignancies.
• Utilize histology, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and other advanced techniques to support diagnoses.
• Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and clinical conferences to discuss complex pulmonary and thoracic cases.
• Collaborate with pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists to ensure comprehensive patient care.
• Maintain compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements including CLIA, CAP, and New York State Department of Health regulations.
• Participate in quality assurance, quality control, and laboratory improvement initiatives.
• Provide consultation to clinicians regarding diagnostic findings and appropriate testing.
• Contribute to teaching and mentoring residents, fellows, and laboratory staff when applicable.
• Stay current with developments in pulmonary pathology and participate in continuing medical education and professional activities.

Experience Requirements

• Completion of an accredited residency in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP).
• Fellowship training in Pulmonary Pathology, Thoracic Pathology, or Surgical Pathology with a pulmonary focus preferred.
• Demonstrated experience diagnosing pulmonary and thoracic pathology cases including lung biopsies and cytology specimens.
• Experience working in hospital-based or academic pathology laboratories preferred.
• Familiarity with molecular pathology and advanced diagnostic techniques related to thoracic diseases is desirable.

Education Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.

Licenses or Certifications Requirements

• Valid New York State Physician License or eligibility to obtain one.
• Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABP), or board eligible with expectation of certification.
• Subspecialty certification or fellowship training in Pulmonary/Thoracic Pathology preferred.
