University Background California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) is a federally recognized Hispanic‑Serving Institution located in Ventura County. The university supports diverse, inclusive education for approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students and seeks candidates committed to service, justice, and collaboration. Basic Function Provide athletic training services for 22 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams and 6 JV teams. The position supports student‑athletes through prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries, performance training, and health education. Representative Duties Provide preventative and therapeutic treatments and athletes’ coverage as assigned by the Director of Athletics and the Head Athletic Trainer. Provide care to student‑athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Manage the training room, including referring injuries to appropriate medical facilities. Maintain athletic injury care records and reports, following NCAA, HIPAA, and NATA guidelines. Perform performance training for Cal‑Lutheran athletes during seasons and non‑traditional times and develop strength‑and‑conditioning programs. Monitor pre‑existing health conditions of student‑athletes. Provide medical services during games and practices, home and away, throughout the regular school year and vacation periods. Assist in communicating the department’s health‑insurance policies to student‑athletes and coaches. Provide general athletic‑room services. Perform skills as outlined by the NATABOC and NATA Educational Council. Work with the team physician to complete preseason physical examinations and weekly treatments. Supervise student athletic trainers. Supervise certified trainers as needed for contest and practice coverage. Attend athletic‑department meetings and other university functions as assigned. Perform other related administrative and committee duties as assigned. Knowledge Excellent organizational, supervisory, and problem‑solving skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Computer proficiency. Experience in budgetary and supervisory tasks related to athletic training. Ability to coordinate multiple activities and manage simultaneous projects. Knowledge of sports‑medicine principles for prevention and treatment of injuries. Knowledge of body‑mechanics, flexibility, and strength training. Basic understanding of sports‑medicine pedagogy. Understanding of goals and objectives of assigned activity. Ability to operate and use sports‑medicine equipment. Familiarity with health‑and‑safety regulations. Strong interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Public‑speaking techniques. Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Abilities Participate in rigorous physical activities. Prepare and deliver oral presentations. Maintain routine records. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. Operate, service, and perform minor repairs on equipment. Develop and teach strength‑and‑conditioning curriculum for intercollegiate athletes. Learn new software and systems for reporting and record keeping of athletic‑related injuries. Work business hours and extended hours, including evenings and weekends. Minimum Qualifications Any combination equivalent to: A bachelor’s degree in athletic training or a related field, and NATABOC certification. Preferred Qualifications Current CPR and first‑aid certification; certification to teach CPR; master’s degree; Class B California driver’s license. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid California driver’s license. Valid first‑aid and CPR certificate issued by an authorized agency. Current NATABOC athletic‑training certificate. Physical Abilities Dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate and participate in athletic practices; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; standing for extended periods; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; hearing and speaking; carrying, pushing or pulling; lifting heavy objects or individuals required in rehabilitative activities. Working Environment Indoor and outdoor work environment; driving a vehicle for work; exposure to adverse weather; subject to evening, weekend, night, and holiday work hours and varying schedules.
