Physician-Ophthalmology (Retina Specialist)

Summary The Omaha VA medical center is seeking an Ophthalmologist – Retina Specialist to join the Ophthalmology Section of the Surgery Service. The physician functions within an interdisciplinary staff consisting of physicians, optometrists, health technicians, administrative and clerical staff and is responsible and accountable for ensuring the provision of comprehensive surgical/clinical services and complies with established policies within the Department of Surgery/Ophthalmology section. Qualifications To qualify for this position the applicant must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification Approved residencies include those recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Alternatives include one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑US residency followed by at least three years of independent practice in the United States. Board‑eligible or board‑certified Ophthalmologist preferred. Experience as a comprehensive ophthalmologist with skills in basic retina, including intraocular injections, is preferred. Proficiency in spoken and written English Physical requirements: ability to perform all activities without restriction; heavy lifting (≥45 lbs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (3 h/day), standing (6 h/day), kneeling (2 h/day), rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13″ to 16″, far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, color discrimination, hearing (aid permitted). Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, visit Duties The Ophthalmologist – Retina Specialist will perform primary clinical and surgical duties within the Whole Health System approach. Responsibilities include managing and treating a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions, providing retina subspecialty care, performing surgeries and laser procedures, managing patient orders, participating in quality improvement activities, supervising residents, attending calls, and collaborating with other providers. Advocate Whole Health System care and create personalized health plans for Veterans Manage anterior and posterior segment diseases – glaucoma, diabetic retinal disorders, macular degeneration, and ophthalmic neurological disorders Perform retina surgery: membrane peels, vitrectomies, retinal detachments, retinal injections, and other related procedures Perform YAG, SLT, and/or Argon laser surgeries Manage medical disorders affecting vision (inflammatory, vascular, neurological, genetic, thyroid eye disease, diabetes, strokes) Handle all patient orders: laboratory, imaging, pharmacy, prosthetics, specialty consults in CPRS See patients individually or in resident clinics, opiating independently, and staff residents in O.R.
