Summary THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a MACHINIST (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D1212000 and is part of the NC G4, National Guard (G4-MATES/ MD 7021-803). Duties As a MACHINIST, WG-3414-11, you will perform machining work to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications; plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, part models, and other specifications and instructions; receive work orders that indicate what work is to be done and plan work accordingly; lay out work by measuring and marking straight lines, arcs, circles, angles, and location points as guides for setting up work pieces for drilling, tapping, turning, milling, boring, reaming, shaping, grinding, honing, and lapping; use a variety of measuring and marking tools; use trade mathematics and standard handbook formulas in making computations; set up and operate conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, planers, grinders, thread grinders, radial drills; grind and sharpen tools; select tools, jigs, and fixtures; perform precision handwork; use bench‑mounted and handheld tools; and perform heat‑treating, welding, and soldering. Conditions of Employment NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement. Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation. You may be required to successfully complete a 1- or 2‑year probation/trail period to assess performance, conduct, agency needs, public interest, and efficiency. Employment ends unless certified in writing that it advances the agency's interest. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Qualifications Military Grades: Enlisted (E4-E7) Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools. Specialized Experience (18 months): Experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments; experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information; skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions; skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools; knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
