Summary Speech-Language Pathologist 1 is responsible for patient evaluation and the application of a wide variety of therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients with speech and language disorders, cognitive deficits, oral motor disorders, dysphasia, voice disorders and hearing disorders. Patient populations may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups. Responsibilities Examines, evaluates, diagnoses, and administers treatment for patients with speech, language, cognitive, voice, swallowing/feeding and hearing disorders. Demonstrates appropriate evaluation and counseling skills to patients of all age groups with ongoing assessment and re‑evaluation as needed. Possesses and maintains understanding of the principles of growth and development as it pertains to patient care. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the information to implement effective therapeutic interventions specific to patient’s age and clinical needs. Considers specific patient variables such as age, cognitive status, stamina, etc., in planning treatment goals and sessions to best serve patient’s needs. Develops appointment schedules that achieve maximum feasible therapeutic impact. Maintains active and supportive communication with the patient and others concerned regarding progress, problems, home programs, and other issues related to the therapeutic process. Attends patient care staffing meetings, conferences, and other related meetings pertaining to speech‑language pathology patients. Develops age‑specific education materials for patients, families, and staff, and conducts internal and external education functions (in‑services, workshops) to improve the quality of patient care. Assists in the development and implementation of the department’s Quality Improvement program under guidance from the department head and the rehabilitation QI coordinator. Maintains all appropriate departmental records (evaluation findings, therapy programs, results) and adheres to patient confidentiality guidelines. Participates in mandatory unit, department, and hospital in‑services to understand policies and procedures related to patient and employee safety issues including infection control, risk management, and AIDS. Supervises student clinicians for speech‑language pathology graduate programs. Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development in the field of speech‑language pathology through reading literature and attending in‑service training. Follows and performs all related unit‑specific policies and procedures detailed on the competency checklist. Utilizes job‑specific equipment as required. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned. Performs advanced duties outlined in the Rehab Clinical Ladder that must be pre‑approved and determined by the Rehab Committee. Experience Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience. Education Advanced degree in specialty is required. Skill Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job‑appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain required unit‑specific and organizational competencies, certifications/licensures as mandated by the nursing area. Credentials Active License as a Speech Pathologist required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life‑support certification for healthcare providers is mandatory upon hire with at least 6 months validity and must be maintained at JHS for the duration of employment. Unit Specific Credential Basic Life Support (BLS) Working Conditions Physical Requirements Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds and lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with appropriate devices. Must have frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Environmental Conditions Must function in a fast‑paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations. Must interact with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies, and the public.
