Control Room Technician

The Control Room Technician is responsible for operating the secure control center of the Clallam County Jail, providing critical security, communication, and administrative support to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This position monitors and controls facility access, surveillance systems, communications equipment, and emergency alarm systems while coordinating the movement of staff, inmates, and visitors in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Control Room Technician also performs a variety of clerical and customer service functions, including maintaining security logs, processing inmate account transactions, responding to public and agency inquiries, preparing reports, and managing records and correspondence. The incumbent must exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and respond quickly and effectively to routine and emergency situations while supporting the overall security and operation of the County's corrections facility.

Typical Duties

Employees in this position will:

  • Operate perimeter doors from control console, appropriate with established procedures. Maintain security of jail facility, confirming doors are secure at all times. Limits law enforcement, public, and criminal justice access to the facility.
  • Operate communications systems, including radio, intercom, E-mail, voice mail, and telephone.
  • Operate video monitoring system through the use of multiple television cameras and monitoring screens.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries of the public and government agencies about individuals incarcerated in Clallam County Corrections Facility, following established procedures to assure confidentiality.
  • Maintain records or logs of each person entering or leaving the facility; monitor via television cameras the movements of any person entering or leaving the facility; monitor and log the movements of individuals leaving or entering the work release facility by asking appropriate questions and directing them correctly. Maintain ongoing activity log.
  • Receive and log information about individuals housed in all cells in the jail and work release facility, assuring accuracy of information and relaying it appropriately at shift-change time.
  • Monitor all smoke and fire alarms in the facility. If an alarm appears on the graphic panel, control operator notifies the Sergeant to check the area and determine the need to implement further emergency procedures.
  • Type various correspondence, forms, and/or reports.
  • Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail in accordance with established distribution procedures.
  • Enter data into and generate reports from a computer system as required.
  • Assist with on-the-job training and orientation of new incumbents in the positions. Attend meetings, workshops and special training programs as directed.
  • Accept, receive, receipt, and accurately account for money deposited to or released from inmate accounts.
  • Appropriately route correspondence, memos, and information to and from jail staff.
  • Answer multi-line telephone and accurately screen, transfer, or take messages from public and other government agencies.
  • Respond to contacts at the jail lobby window and respond to activity generated by public and other sources.
  • Operate computer systems including jail management, word processing, database, and spreadsheet.
  • Perform other duties assigned to ensure orderly and proper functioning of the Clallam County Corrections Facility.

Control Room Technicians are supervised by their assigned Corrections Sergeant.

Education, Training, & Experience

Recruitment criteria:

  • Position is non-promotive. It is filled from a list of eligible candidates for Control Room Technician
  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • 18 years of age at time of testing
  • Citizen of the United States of America or lawful permanent resident, who can read and write the English language (R.C.W. 41.12.070)
  • Washington State Driver's License
  • Administrative/clerical experience involving heavy public contact
  • No felony convictions or convictions for misdemeanors involving moral turpitude
  • Pass Polygraph Test
  • Pass Psychological Evaluation
  • Pass Medical Physical
  • Pass Pre-Employment Drug Test
  • Pass Background Check
  • Pass OSHA/Designated Required Training
