ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Facilitate timely evaluation of students referred for special education services; conduct reevaluation for continued service in accordance with state rules and regulations; provide technical assistance to the school staff in meeting the needs of special education students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and adhere to established work schedules. Plan appropriate assessment procedures to establish student progress and performance. Administer diagnostic educational evaluations to assess the academic functioning and educational needs of students. Participate in team-based behavior assessment and the development of intervention strategies with school staff. Facilitate the reevaluation and redetermination process in accordance with state rules and regulations. Collaborate with school psychologists to complete comprehensive educational reports and/or functional behavior assessments. Participate in eligibility meetings to assist in the determination of student disability and/or the need for special education services. Provide post-assessment information to parents, teachers, and other special education staff (as needed). Conduct training and provide direction for teachers on assessment, eligibility, and data collection procedures. Assist in training teachers with conducting IEPs and providing specialized instruction, when appropriate. Provide consultation to parents, teachers, administrators, and others on topics such as learning styles and behavior modification techniques. Consult and collaborate with school administration, instructional staff, and parents regarding the individual educational and academic needs of students. Provide information/suggestions to teachers to facilitate the development and monitoring of SMART Goals/Objectives. Assist in the development of positive behavior supports and intervention strategies and provide consultative services using a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach for select students. Demonstrate initiative in seeking additional training and skills as the need arises. Follow current research and best practices in instruction and curriculum, learning, special education, and assessment. Facilitate the educational and transitional planning for special education students. Follow the guidance and regulations specified by the MCS Department of Special Services and Educational Support as well as Professional Standards Commission Code of Ethics for Educators. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Special Education and/or the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field emphasizing assessment, learning theory, and instructional interventions Certification/License Required: Valid Georgia Teaching Certificate Experience: Minimum of five (5) years experience providing services to students with disabilities preferred. Experience in educational assessment, instruction and consultation as a teacher or educational diagnostician required. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Demonstrates the ability to effectively collaborate and lead decision-making and design and implement plans. Comprehensive understanding of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learner. Ability to effectively multi-task and coordinate the work of others. Ability to maintain professional demeanor in stressful situations. Advanced communication skills - oral and written. Skilled in the operation of computers and common software programs (Microsoft office suite applications) and demonstrated ability to leverage technology to complete tasks. Demonstrates ability to operate in a self-directed, organized and collaborative manner. Highly effective time management, prioritization and project organization skills. Expertise in curriculum based assessment and instructional interventions. Ability to resolve and de-escalate conflicts. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and colleagues. Knowledge of special education rules and regulations. Physical Activities: Routine physical activities are required to fulfill job responsibilities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Frequent driving is performed while meeting the demands of this job. Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet multiple demands from several people as well as deadlines with severe time constraints. Occasionally, the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. The position requires direct responsibility for the work output of other people and their safety and wellbeing. Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is typically quite to moderate, sometimes loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with public, staff and students.
