Title: Production Editor

We are seeking a results-oriented, quality-focused  Production Editor to manage the production process for selected products, ensuring delivery on time, on budget, and in alignment with quality and technical standards.

Job Purpose

The Production Editor manages all production-related activities from unedited content through release for distribution and sale across digital, print, multimedia products, and associated supplements. The successful candidate will manage multiple projects at various production stages, follow standard and customized workflows, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, manage schedules and budgets, and ensure products meet Springer Publishing’s quality and technical standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Serve as project manager for multiple concurrent digital and print projects at various stages of production, establishing clear timelines and expectations for stakeholders.
• Assess content projects for completeness and consistency, identifying and planning for unique production needs, including copyediting, design, and multimedia requirements.
• Review front matter, covers, supplementary materials, and final files for accuracy, quality, and consistency.
• Select, engage, and manage vendors to complete key production activities; supervise and evaluate copyediting and vendor performance to ensure alignment with house style, quality standards, and project requirements.
• Ensure high levels of quality and consistency by applying error-elimination strategies, established standards, and sound editorial judgment; identify deviations and confidently approve content prior to acceptance, handoff, and release.
• Develop detailed project schedules; track and monitor progress; maintain accurate records of project status and vendor performance; and address or escalate potential risks throughout the production process.
• Coordinate the generation, review, and finalization of supplementary content in accordance with project plans and organizational requirements.
• Coordinate and monitor corrections, identify and resolve broad quality concerns, and enforce adherence to applicable style guides.
• Coordinate production activities within content management systems, as required.
• Lead transmittal meetings for assigned projects and provide regular status and risk updates to stakeholders.
• Maintain clear, timely, and professionally assertive communication with internal colleagues, authors, and service providers.
• Work collaboratively across the organization to meet project objectives and support process improvements.
• Ensure data integrity by maintaining accurate records of assignments and project status in internal databases.
• Prepare and supply final content and files for multiformat delivery, including print, platform, and electronic products, in accordance with organizational standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of five years of book-production experience, ideally in nursing, medicine, or another health-professions publishing environment.
• Experience producing content across print and digital formats.
• Excellent grammar, language, editing, and communication skills.
• Proficiency in copyediting and familiarity with APA, AMA, and Chicago citation styles.
• Familiarity with rights and permissions, art, and design processes.
• Ability to independently manage multiple projects, meet established deadlines, and communicate proactively about project status, quality, and cost.
• Strong attention to detail, accountability, and sense of urgency.
• Working knowledge of XML, DITA, and XML-first composition workflows.
• High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with component content management systems and other digital workflow tools.

Work Location and Travel

• Ability to travel to Springer Publishing’s Princeton, New Jersey, headquarters as required.
