The Department of Philosophy at Carleton College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting on September 1, 2027. Members of groups traditionally under-represented in Philosophy are encouraged to apply. AOS: Philosophy of computing and/or AI ethics and/or philosophy of technology and/or philosophy of data science and/or data ethics AOC: Logic and/or formal epistemology The Philosophy Department seeks candidates with potential for high-quality scholarship and a commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal arts setting. While candidates who have substantially completed their PhD will be considered, a PhD must be completed before the start of employment. The teaching load for this position is 5 courses a year on a trimester calendar (Fall, Winter, and Spring 10-week terms) with 4 courses in the first year of employment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach a mixture of introductory- and advanced-level courses that should appeal to philosophy majors who are interested in technology, computer science or data science as well as students in other majors who are interested in philosophical approaches to these topics. Carleton’s Philosophy department is a collegial community with many events for faculty and students. Our faculty has regular joint colloquia and an annual retreat with the philosophy department at St. Olaf College College, also in Northfield, MN. Our faculty are affiliated with other programs and departments at Carleton, such as Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Statistics and Data Science, or Cognitive Science and have interdisciplinary research interests. Our majors have gone on to graduate school in Philosophy, Engineering, Economics, Psychology, as well as medical school, law school, and have pursued non-philosophical careers with a variety of employers. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
