Nuclear Medicine Technologist

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NM Tech) performs nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic procedures. They work under a Radiologist's supervision. These procedures are for ambulatory and hospital patients. A physician or licensed provider requests them for diagnosing disease and injury. They follow established protocols.

The NM Tech performs high-quality nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic procedures according to exam protocol. They evaluate the quality of imaging procedures and follow established standards. They maintain equipment by performing quality control as required by imaging manufacturers, RAM, or ACR. They work with engineers and physicists to ensure optimal equipment capabilities.

They communicate with patients to identify service needs, ensure the correct exam is performed, and establish rapport with patients and others. They instruct and communicate with patients and their family, following HIPAA, about the test and assess the patient's ability to tolerate the exam.

They explain the procedure thoroughly to put patients at ease. They protect patients and team members by following safety requirements, infection-control, protocols, and techniques. They prepare the patient and area for the procedure by positioning the patient, adjusting immobilization devices, and moving equipment into position. They use proper aseptic or sterile techniques when setting up and performing invasive procedures. They maintain hand hygiene requirements.

They safeguard patients, team members, and themselves by following all radiation safety rules, policies, and techniques. They verify the correct radioactive drug for the exam or treatment. They screen patients for pregnancy status before the exam or treatment. They safely administer radiopharmaceuticals and medications per protocol. They educate patients on radiation safety techniques before and after the exam or treatment. They safely follow radiation disposal guidelines.

They report issues to leadership or the appropriate department. They assist in maintaining supplies inventory and ordering radiopharmaceuticals for patient care and quality control. They work with colleagues, nursing partners, medical staff, and Radiologists. They ensure accurate transfer of patient images to the BSWH PACS for clinical review and dictation by physician partners.

They observe changes in patients' medical conditions and communicate them to nursing partners, physicians, and emergency teams. They administer first aid and use the emergency cart. They demonstrate and maintain current knowledge, education, and skills for caring for these age groups: newborn, pediatric, young adult, adult, and geriatric. They provide services timely, accurately, and cost-efficiently in compliance with established system and regulatory standards, policies, and procedures. They perform tasks autonomously without need for routine oversight. They stay calm and helpful during stress. They take reasonable steps to resolve issues. They ensure customer satisfaction by limiting wait times and providing courteous service. They remain professional, review patient satisfaction scores, and develop action plans when needed. They serve as trainers by providing quality education to new team members and students from BSW approved programs. They adhere to policies, procedures, and workflows. These include PACS, EMR, image exchange systems, modality worklist integrity, record management, and Biomedical services. They have general computer skills, including Microsoft Office, information security, electronic medical documentation, and email. They are able to take call, if required.

They are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine - ARRT (N). They are certified by the NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board) as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT).
