SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD

Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to perform traffic control and safety patrol work with respect to safeguarding the movement of school children.

Scope and Judgment:

Performs highly responsible traffic duties following generally standardized practices, procedure, but which may involve choice of alternative approaches, thus requiring some decision making and judgment.

Supervision Received:

Work is performed under the general supervision of the safety officer. Completes work in accordance with established department policies and standards referring all questionable cases to supervisor. Once job comprehensions and correctness are verified, receives minimal performance monitoring.

Job Environment:

• Work is performed outdoors on a regular basis regardless of weather.
• May operate portable radio to contact supervisor if situation out of the ordinary occurs.
• Frequently has contact with general public at all times, sometimes requiring more than ordinary tact and authority to achieve desired results.
• Has no involvement with confidential information.
• Errors could result in costly, jeopardizing life & limb of school children.

Essential Functions:

• Directs traffic at assigned crossings to protect school children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic.
• Insures that children use the proper crossing locations and that no children are in the street while traffic is moving.
• Stays alert for present and potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding the assigned crossings.
• Submits to supervisor a written report of any such hazards with a recommendation for remedial action.
• Reports directly to assigned crossing stations, on time and remains there until the conclusion of the assignment.
• Controls vehicular traffic to allow safe passage across streets.
• Slows down fast moving traffic passing schools and reports violations.
• May offer incidental instruction to children in safety rules and precautions.
• May assist in discouraging truancy inclinations.
• Must be available to attend regular training sessions as scheduled.
• Performs similar or related work as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience : High school education; elementary knowledge of police work which can be readily learned through short instruction.

Special Requirements :

• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
• Ability to obtain CPR certification.

Knowledge: Common sense and maturity

Ability:

• Ability to acquire a working understanding of the department's protocols.
• Ability to utilize common sense in dealing with traffic situations.
• Ability to act quickly to respond to emergencies.
• Ability to be firm yet courteous with the public.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Skills: Available to work all school year, on a split shift schedule, coinciding with assigned schools opening and closing times.

The essential functions of the job require the physical strength, stamina and agility to stand and walk during the duration of performing duties. Also requires the visual and auditory acuity.
