Civil Engineer II

As a Civil Engineer II, you will play an essential role in supporting civil and utility infrastructure projects from inception through completion. The Civil Engineer II will be responsible for performing civil engineering analysis and design in support of utility, power, and infrastructure projects. This role requires an intermediate level of engineering knowledge, project experience, sound technical judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams. The individual will prepare engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and other technical deliverables while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and client specifications. The Civil Engineer II will work under the direction of senior engineers and project managers while assuming increasing responsibility for the technical execution and coordination of assigned projects. Key Responsibilities: Perform civil engineering design and analysis for electric utility, power delivery, and infrastructure projects. Prepare and review civil design drawings, plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and other technical documentation for Senior Engineer review. Support civil engineering design for utility facilities, substations, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and other utility-related projects. Work in the development of overhead and underground physical construction design packages for various projects related to the electric utility industry in the Greater Chicago area. Review survey information, existing site conditions, utility records, geotechnical information, and other project data to support engineering design. Identify potential utility conflicts and coordinate proposed civil improvements with existing and proposed underground and above-ground infrastructure. Perform engineering calculations and analyses necessary to support project design and construction documentation. Prepare quantities, material estimates, engineering specifications, and other documentation required for project design and construction. Collaborate with electrical, distribution, substation, and other engineering disciplines to develop coordinated and constructible designs. Coordinate with project managers, senior engineers, designers, drafters, field personnel, clients, and other project stakeholders to ensure project requirements are understood and incorporated into deliverables. Participate in project meetings and provide technical input regarding civil engineering requirements, design alternatives, schedules, constructability, and project issues. Assist in resolving civil engineering issues identified during design and construction. Review contractor, vendor, and other third-party submittals for general conformance with project plans and specifications, as assigned. Maintain accurate project documentation, including calculations, drawings, design revisions, correspondence, and technical records. Incorporate review comments and lessons learned into project deliverables and demonstrate continued development of technical knowledge and engineering judgment. Communicate project status, technical concerns, schedule risks, and potential scope changes to the Project Manager or Senior Engineer in a timely manner. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification / successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. 3–6 years of relevant civil engineering experience, preferably involving utility, power, energy, infrastructure, site development, or related projects. Proficiency in AutoCAD. Experience preparing civil engineering plans, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation. Working knowledge of civil/site design principles, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, earthwork, utilities, and site development. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, surveys, utility plans, specifications, and other technical documents. Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities while meeting established project schedules and deadlines. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality engineering work. Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats. Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project managers, clients, contractors, and field personnel. Demonstrated willingness to learn new technical skills, client standards, software applications, and utility engineering requirements. Preferred Qualifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or actively progressing toward PE licensure. Previous civil engineering experience within the electric utility or power delivery industry. Proficient in TED/CEGIS Experience with substation, transmission, distribution, ComEd, or other similar power provider projects. Experience with utility coordination, relocation, conflict analysis, and underground utility design. Familiarity with Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and engineering document management systems.
