Sergeant

The City of Murphy's Police Department seeks to add a Sergeant to its dynamic team! Appointed by the Chief of Police and under the direction of the Operations Lieutenant, this is a supervisory-ranked police officer position responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and supervising departmental personnel, activities, and resources at shift level.

The Police Sergeant provides first-line supervision of patrol personnel, ensures compliance with Department policies and procedures, provides leadership and officer development through coaching and mentoring, and serves as a supervisor during routine, emergency, and critical incidents.

This position requires rotating shift assignments, including day and night shifts. This position will rotate between day shift and night shift assignments every six (6) months. Work schedules may include weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency response, and call-back status as necessary to meet Department operational needs.

Pay Plan: Step 1 - Step 2 - Step 3 - Step 4

$103,514.11 - $107,137.11 - $110,886.90 - $114,767.95

All levels of pay may be offered by the Chief of Police dependent upon relevant experience.

Examples of Duties
  • Patrols specific beat assignment, if necessary, to promote public safety and enhance the quality of life in that assigned area
  • Promotes a positive Department image through community-policing efforts, including community meetings, problem-solving initiatives, and public engagement activities.
  • Provides supervision, training, guidance, and direction to assigned personnel.
  • Conducts shift briefings and communicates the Department directives, policies, procedures, training information, and operational expectations.
  • Reviews crime analysis information and trends to develop appropriate enforcement strategies, crime prevention efforts, and operational responses. Reviews crime trends with assigned shifts regularly.
  • Performs inspections of issued and non-issued equipment to ensure proper maintenance and readiness. Ensures officers' uniforms, equipment, and assigned gear are maintained in accordance with Department standards.
  • Performs the essential duties and responsibilities of a Police Officer as needed
  • Provides coaching, mentoring, and leadership to assigned personnel to address performance, conduct, and professional development needs. Reports ongoing performance concerns through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Provides effective supervision, control, and coordination of personnel, resources, and activities within the assigned shift, unit, or section.
  • Reviews and approves police reports, arrest reports, citations, affidavits, and other documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Department policies and applicable laws.
  • Responds to and supervises critical incidents, emergency calls, and situations requiring supervisory direction.
  • Assigns work activities and assists with staffing decisions and deployment of personnel to meet operational needs.
  • Conducts inspections of operational functions to identify opportunities for improvement and recommends solutions.
  • Coordinates activities with Department personnel to ensure consistent interpretation and implementation of Administrative Orders, City Ordinances, policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and provides feedback, training, and development opportunities to assigned personnel.
  • Reviews officer performance through direct observation, report review, body-worn camera review, and other available performance measures.
  • Maintains professional knowledge, skills, and abilities and completes all required training requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for maintaining a peace officer license.
  • Assists in developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of subordinate personnel to enhance performance and career development.
  • Researches current law enforcement practices, techniques, and methods to assist with training development and operational improvement.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, Department policies, procedures, and Administrative Orders.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED);
  • Intermediate Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
  • Seven (7) years' experience as a Texas Peace Officer.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, such as:
  1. Field Training Officer
  2. Acting Supervisor or Officer in Charge
  3. Specialized Unit Leader
  4. Comparable leadership assignment
  • No pending substantial employer disciplinary actions;
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License - driving record must be in compliance with City policy.
Supplemental Information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited university;
  • Advanced Peace Officer, or higher, License as issued by TCOLE.
  • Ten (10) years' experience as a Texas Peace Officer.
  • Three (3) years' experience holding a formal supervisor rank.
  • Experience conducting evaluations, training, coaching, and mentoring personnel.
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership development and community policing.

Special Requirements:

  • Required to pass a drug screen and/or pre-employment job performance assessment;
  • Required to work flexible hours and accept on-call duty and call out status.
  • Must be willing to work assigned patrol schedules, including weekends, holidays, nights, and emergency situations.
  • Must successfully complete all required background investigations and selection processes.
