Electrical Engineer III (Power Systems)

Job Summary As an Electrical Engineer III (Power Systems) at S&C Electric Company, you will help transform the grid for resilient and reliable power worldwide, leveraging your expertise in power system design and innovation. Hours 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Mon‑Fri) Hybrid Compensation Estimated annual base salary range: $103,510 – $137,121.6. Salary determined by performance, skills, experience, and education. Eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan (AIP). Key Responsibilities Develop power system logic and algorithms, gathering requirements, setting performance targets, brainstorming solutions and implementing prototypes. Represent the engineering customer when developing solutions, providing requirements and guidance to software developers. Test software embodiments of protection and control schemes to ensure they meet the needs and expectations of the customer, including use of real‑time hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulators. Contribute to planning tools to help customers place and configure S&C products. Build support for novel product solutions by promoting them to stakeholders within S&C and to potential customers. Author technical papers and present at technical conferences. Research future customer needs through literature review, conferences, discussions with colleagues and external customers, and participation in industry activities. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s or PhD highly preferred). Minimum of 3 years industry experience in an R&D setting contributing to cyber‑physical systems that make decisions based on measurements of the physical environment. Proficiency in at least one programming language such as MATLAB, Python or C++. Experience influencing stakeholders beyond direct reports. Experience executing power system studies, including power flow, short‑circuit studies and dynamic simulation. Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate with colleagues. Preferred (but not required) Designing, executing and analyzing real‑time hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulations. Knowledge of overcurrent protection and coordination, and symmetrical components. Experience with graph‑theory and optimization algorithms. Understanding of power system communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 61850 or IEC 60870‑5‑104 (IEC 104). Experience developing and testing configurable logic. Job Requirements Must work in the Chicago office in person 3 to 5 days per week. 10 % domestic and international travel.
