Physician Spinal Cord Injury (Physiatry)

Summary The Albuquerque NMVAHCS is hiring one Physician (Spinal Cord Injury). The Albuquerque Zia SCI Center serves as a VA referral center for the Southwest region and cares for approximately 400 SCI/D Veterans. The Center is affiliated with the University of New Mexico and hosts rotations for medical students and residents in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurology, Internal Medicine, and Family Practice. Qualifications Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Candidates who have not yet completed training or licensing requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are satisfied. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Completion of an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or (1) one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice, or (2) non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. with duties related to the position. PRPs: Residents in accredited programs who would otherwise meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers under an intermittent basis; they must be fully licensed physicians and not considered independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Duties Manage a patient panel for both inpatient and outpatient care, utilizing technology such as telemedicine to deliver comprehensive services. Participate in patient care using telemedicine, continuous improvement activities, and JCAHO compliance. Provide a full range of services, including assessment and care of acute and chronic patients with spinal cord injuries or disorders (SCI/D). Participate in team meetings and treatment‑planning conferences, collaborating with interdisciplinary team members to enhance coordinated patient care. Ensure that practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPAA policies. Engage in continuous improvement activities to maintain high standards of patient care and outcomes, aligned with the goals of the SCI/D Care Line. Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Spinal Cord Injury. Position includes rotating weekend and holiday call among three physicians; work schedule is Monday‑Friday 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Salary and compensation are determined by a Physician’s Compensation panel and approved by the Medical Center Director.
