Health Clerk/Technician

Summary/Objective

The Health Clerk/Technician is trained by and works under the direction and license of the professional School Registered Nurse. The health clerk is responsible for providing health care within their scope of practice, basic life support, and first aid, and maintaining student documents, compiling data and developing reports, as well as other duties for the purpose of improving and maintaining optimal student health. Providing coverage as needed, including but not limited to: main building health office, middle school health office, isolation room, field trip assignment, and activities or events on school campus.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Respond and attend to school health office visitors and in emergency situations; provide health care and/or first aid to students/staff following approved CPR procedures and designated protocols to respond efficiently.
• Administers needed medications to students, assisting, monitoring and/or administering treatments, under the delegation of the School Registered Nurse, according to the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
• Understands and follows Universal Precautions at all times in caring for ill and injured students, staff and visitors.
• Maintains a sanitary, orderly, and attractive health office, and takes regular inventory of clinic supplies and communicates supply needs to school nurse.
• Responsible for utilizing and preserving the isolation area to provide screening and comfort care for students and/or adults who are exhibiting symptoms that may be concerning for communicable illness during school hours.
• Generates and maintains accurate and detailed records of health office activities and individual student health records, including health-office visits, HCAP, immunization, medication, vision and hearing, cumulative health, and accident and injury records.

UNDERSTANDS AND RESPECTS THE STRICT CONFINES OF CONFIDENTIALITY :

• Confers with School Registered Nurse regarding student absences for health reasons (communicable or nuisance disease, injury, hospitalization, etc.).
• Notifies and assists with coordinating student health needs, as needed between teachers, nurse, and parents
• Utilizes effective human relations skills to achieve positive working relationships with the School Registered Nurse, staff, students, and community members.
• Participates and contributes to teamwork environment, including ability to perform duties across K-12 settings.
• Maintains a consistent physical presence in assigned workspace.
• Develops computer forms, reports, and other documents as needed for field trips, school, district, and state reports.
• Assists with coordination of delegation and preparation and return of medications for field trips, for administration by other Delegated UAPs.
• Assists with organizing and participates as needed in state-mandated, school-wide health screening, maintaining records of completion, and follow-up for referrals.
• Completes ongoing in-person and online training as assigned.
• Attends health services and general staff meetings.
• Follows procedures for reporting suspected child abuse-neglect as a mandated reporter
• Remains flexible and accepts other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Effective and appropriate use of health office and Isolation room equipment. Including but not limited to thermometers, blood pressure equipment, glucometer, pulse oximeter, wheelchairs, vision and hearing screening equipment, and personal protective equipment.
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, use time efficiently, and respond professionally to management direction.
• Ability to demonstrate attention to detail and maintain fidelity and accuracy in a fast-paced environment
• Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, and parents in any public setting and chooses the appropriate time, place for discussion of concerns or interactions.
• Ability and willingness to adhere to attendance requirements, including regular and punctual employee presence.
• Ability to support all University Schools policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse roles, ethnic and educational backgrounds

Education, Qualification and Related Work Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One year of related experience
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable
• preferred skills in Spanish

Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

• Successful completion of the Colorado Medication Administration Training for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (if not currently certified, successful completion must be completed before any contact with student population per state law)
• Complete and maintain Delegation of Nursing Tasks to UAP with supervising RN
• Successful completion and maintaining of approved First Aid/CPR certification
• CART Training yearly
• OSHA, Universal Precaution and other general employee certification as designated by supervising RN
• Criminal background check required for hire

Safety Requirements

• Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in school policy, federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
• Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.

Working Conditions:

• Works in school-based health clinic and school building environments.
• Exposure to body secretions, blood-borne pathogens, medicine and medical supplies, illnesses and diseases.
• May be exposed to poor weather conditions including heat, cold, wet and snow and other outdoor weather conditions.
• The work environment combines standard office settings including some standard office equipment (time clock, fax, copier, phone, computer, 10-key, etc.)
• The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities.
