Opportunity Overview

Position Summary for Thoracic Surgeon

Our organization is in search of a board-certified Thoracic Surgeon to become a part of our dedicated Thoracic Surgery Associates team. This position will primarily involve performing thoracic (non-cardiac) surgeries, such as lung resections and chest wall reconstructions, with a significant focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques (RATS).

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in robotic and minimally invasive thoracic surgery and will play a vital role in fostering clinical, strategic, and programmatic growth , including leading a high-performing thoracic oncology program.

This role provides a unique opportunity to significantly contribute to the expansion of thoracic surgical services while enhancing clinical quality, patient experience, and overall excellence within the system.

Essential Position Requirements

Clinical Expertise

• Conduct intricate thoracic procedures with an emphasis on lung surgery, including:
• Lobectomy
• Segmentectomy and lung-sparing resections
• A minimum of 5-8 years of experience post-training is preferred.
• Advanced skills and formal credentials in:
• da Vinci robotic surgery
• Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)
• Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with thoracic surgical conditions.

Academic and Research Contributions

• Board Certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
• Proven ability to engage in academic programs, teaching, and clinical research.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Engage in multidisciplinary tumor boards and care conferences.
• Work alongside medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonology, radiology, pathology, and primary care teams.
• Assist in developing coordinated, patient-centered treatment plans.
• Ensure appropriate referrals and continuity of care.

Quality and Patient Experience

• Follow evidence-based clinical guidelines.
• Support initiatives aimed at quality improvement and patient safety.
• Participate in peer review and quality assurance activities.
• Contribute to organizational objectives related to access, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.

Call Coverage

• Engage in a fair call rotation.
• Provide consultation and emergency thoracic surgical services as required.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities

Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Thoracic Surgery Role Breakdown

Program Development

• Support the growth and expansion of thoracic surgery services.
• Engage in strategic initiatives to enhance access.
• Direct the strategic vision and standardized care pathways for the thoracic surgery service line.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• MD or DO degree.
• Completion of an accredited General Surgery residency.
• Completion of an accredited Thoracic/Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship.
• Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery.
• Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in California.
• DEA registration and eligibility for hospital privileges.

Experience:

• Preference for candidates with ≥8 years of attending experience, particularly in VATS and RATS.

• Expertise in managing thoracic diseases.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary care framework.
