Job Overview:

The main function of the Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations within the laboratory environment.

Responsibilities:

Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance and decontamination data.
Update patient information accurately within the system.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection, such as urine or fecal, to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
Demonstrate proficiency in techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Maintain a full understanding of all physician orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes correctly.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens securely for transport.
Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers.
Follow specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings as required.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
