CUSTODIAN

CustodianUnder general supervision, performs the full range of custodial duties related to the care and cleaning of assigned buildings and facilities.This is an entry-level position in which incumbents are expected to learn and perform the full scope of assigned custodial duties at various City locations.Receives general supervision and direction from Public Works Supervisor or other assigned supervisor. Does not exercise supervision over other staff.Essential functions include cleaning and sanitizing rest room facilities and fixtures, meeting rooms, break rooms, locker rooms, and workout facilities; sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing, stripping, and polishing floors; dusting and polishing furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment; washing windows, mirrors, doors, and walls; emptying, cleaning, and sanitizing waste receptacles; cleaning ceiling light fixtures; cleaning and adjusting shades and blinds; traveling to and from various City facilities in a safe and timely manner; securing facilities after use by ensuring doors and equipment are locked and turned off; cleaning City facilities after meetings and/or events; maintaining cleaning supply inventory; reporting the need for maintenance and repair, including damage or unsafe conditions to assigned supervisor; establishing positive working relationships with the public and co-workers, representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff; and performing other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.The position requires prolonged standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, climbing, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The employee is required to lift and move furniture and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds alone, and up to 100 pounds with assistance. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and coordination, and color vision in driving vehicles, operating equipment, and using tools in a safe manner. The employee is regularly required to use oral communication skills; work independently; and interact with City staff, and others encountered in the course of work. The employee works indoors on a regular basis. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals.Education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Custodian. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience performing custodial duties. Possession of a valid class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service; tools, materials, and methods of custodial maintenance; safe work practices; proper disposal of hazardous materials; the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS); principles and practices of recordkeeping and reporting procedures; occupational hazards and safety measures appropriate to work performed. Ability to operate various types of equipment such as a vacuum, carpet cleaner, and floor buffer; walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, climb, lift, carry, and move furniture and equipment as necessary to perform duties; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; use proper English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; establish and maintain courteous, cooperative, and effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work; exercise sound judgment within established guidelines; work independently and efficiently with a minimum amount of on-site supervision; serve as emergency services worker in the event of an emergency. Skill to safely and effectively operate a variety of cleaning equipment; operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
