Diesel Yard Truck Technician

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing yard trucks with an emphasis on diesel, electrical, hydraulic, and emission systems. The technician performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs while adhering to safety standards and maintaining accurate service records.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance on yard trucks to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including wiring and battery systems.
  • Conduct computer-based diagnostics and repair emission systems, including DPF/DEF components.
  • Execute welding and fabrication tasks as needed to support repairs and modifications.
  • Repair and maintain air brake systems to meet operational and safety requirements.
  • Maintain accurate service records, documentation, and basic computer entries for all work performed.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Utilize personal tools and equipment effectively to perform mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs.
  • Collaborate with the service team to prioritize work orders and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the service leadership to support overall maintenance operations.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in diesel mechanics or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience working with diesel engines and related systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, including wiring and battery diagnostics and repair.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, including air brakes and hydraulic components.
  • Welding experience and familiarity with DPF/DEF emission systems.
  • Basic computer skills for diagnostics, record-keeping, and service documentation.
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
  • DOT/Medical card certification.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks such as stooping, climbing, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and follow established safety protocols.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Ownership of a complete set of quality hand tools is preferred.
  • Experience using diesel, hydraulic, and electrical tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Availability of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch deep and shallow well sockets (metric and standard) with ratchets and extensions.
  • Access to pry bars and aligning tools (such as ladys fingers) for mechanical adjustments.
  • Variety of screwdrivers in multiple types and sizes for general repair work.
  • Wrenches ranging from very small sizes up to 2 inches or metric equivalent in both standard and metric measurements.
  • Selection of hammers in various shapes and sizes for fabrication and repair tasks.
  • Tool cart and/or toolbox to organize and transport tools efficiently.
  • Dome or handheld lights to support work in low-visibility or night shift conditions.

Work Environment

The role is based in an active port environment and requires working outdoors in the elements. The position is on second shift, scheduled Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with a mandatory half shift on Sundays from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Work involves hands-on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and welding tasks on yard trucks, using personal tools, diagnostic equipment, and handheld or dome lights. The environment is physically demanding, requiring lifting, stooping, climbing, and kneeling, and technicians are expected to wear appropriate PPE and follow all safety procedures while working around heavy equipment and moving vehicles.

This is a Permanent position based out of Savannah, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $54080.00 - $58240.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
